This is a discussion on Sky Unlimited (I think?), speeds reduced - possibly too much SNR ? within the Sky Broadband help forums, part of the Sky Broadband help and support category; Holy $%%! - I cannot believe this. This has got to be something to do with Sky's doing rather than ...

      Holy $%%! - I cannot believe this.

This has got to be something to do with Sky's doing rather than a change in the line.

Entered the Router settings, and decided to use the Disconnect button and then was going to Reconnect.

Hit Disconnect, and after a minute or so it wouldnt reconnect.

A message came up in red saying something like
"The software is being updated, please do not disconnect or reset as the connection will refresh itself automatically".

After around 3 minutes then, the router settings came back, and it showed the firmware had been updated. Now reads:

      Firmware Version 2.8 Sky

But the speed has also changed (again), to this:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4192 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 48.0 db 29.0 db
Noise Margin 7.3 db 13.0 db

The noise margin for downstream went up 0.1 db yet upstream noise margin is down by 1.0 db, but look at the Downstream speed...

Down by another ~400 kbps - but only a difference of 0.1 db noise margin - this can't be right. What the $"$ gives?

Note here that Upstream has not changed one iota, even though the noise margin is down by a full 1.0 db.

And I did nothing but press Disconnect.

There's a conspiracy going down here for sure.

IT IS NOTHING TO DO WITH SKY - you would apparently have a bad fault on your line. Start by answering my other question earlier in the thread and we'll go from there

You resynced your router with the exchange which kicked in a software upgrade. 0.1 changes in the noise margin mean nothing. If you leave the stats on your screen for a while you will see the noise margin jumping up and down.

I didn't see you ask any question earlier?

      But if you mean this...

Plug a phone on its own in the test socket and see if there's any hiss, there is a number to ring for the quiet line test - I think it's 017070 but wait for someone to confirm.
I tried this and the line seemed to be quiet, no hiss or anything. The number was 17070 and Option 2 for Quiet Line test.

      So what next?

Jeez you are right, must correct that.

My bad - myself and another family member recieved same Sky package at same time - they received Netgear router and I received Sagem - always get mixed up who received which router.

Having read the info though, the speed problem above still remains

Hi There seems to be issues with the Sagem F@ST 2504 2.8 upgrade. You could ring Sky or wait for someone to give the post the reason why it has happened with the upgrade and how to correct it

I was having these problems before the upgrade though, but the new FW seems to have made it worse
