Being kicked off internet - just one room?

Strange one this, in our son's room he has an Xbox 360 and a PC - they're both connected to the internet using a powerline adaptor....

however, if he turns on his pc whilst the Xbox is switched on it kicks him off the internet and anyone else who might be using it in the house.

I used to have the same problem when he was using both devices 'wireless' and thought the wired internet option would solve the problem.

Usually the quickest way to solve this (short term) is to reset the router downstairs.

It's only his room that causes this as we have laptops in 2 other rooms and xbox's in 2 other rooms - all work perfectly fine at the same time.

Anyone have any idea's what's causing this and how I can rectify it?

      Thank you

Is he a torrent user? If so are they set to start with the PC?

It is possible the PC PSU is putting 'dirty' current back into the power supply which is effecting the router. Try this, go into the router stats and click the Show Statistics button. Get him to switch on his PC and watch what is happening to the noise margins in the router stats.

You have two powerline adapters, one for the xbox and one for the PC i presume? Have you tried swapping them over? Are they connected to the same socket/extension cable - if so move one to a different socket.

Not a torrent user, checked just to make sure.... I'll check the stats tomorrow and see what is going on - thank you :-)

Just using one powerline in his room, it's a netgear one with 2 outputs - not sure this is the problem though as it still happens without the powerline adaptors when operating using wireless.

Re: Being kicked off internet - just one room?

Try it without any connection I.E. just the PC with no wifi or ethernet cables.

If it still does it, try it in another socket (another room one).

If it does not do it in another socket then I would have your socket checked for a bad earth.
If it still does it in another socket then you might try either another PSU in the PC or a suitable mains filter.

PC power supplies are known for noisy switching on the mains when turning them on made worse by a bad earth.

Checking the socket can be done with one of the little socket testers or even just visually by unscrewing and seeing if the earth is screwed into the earth terminal properly (it may be loose) (beware there is mains voltage there - if in doubt turn the power off first).

Re: Being kicked off internet - just one room?

Sorry, bit late getting back to this (been very busy lol)

Anyways, not actually had the problem for a couple of days which is unusual - but have just checked the noise margins as originally suggested....

I've attached images of the results, image 'netstats' is before his pc is switched on - image 'netstats2' is when its been switched on.

Does this mean anything to anyone?

      thank you

*just noticed that after switching off his pc afterwards the noise margin returns to 11.4.db

Possibly the PSU pushing 'dirty' current back into the power circuit. Try using a surge protector on the router and the PC.

Re: Being kicked off internet - just one room?

i'll try that next, the router is downstairs - would that also need a surge protector? or should I just try the pc (seeing as this seems to be the cause?)

      thank you for your help

Re: Being kicked off internet - just one room?

Both would be better, but if you only have one, try it first on the PC, check the figures, then try it on the router. See if there is a difference.
