Do you have wires attached to the faceplate of the XTE ? If not, the faceplate is faulty. If yes, check that they are connected to the proper terminals, they should be connected to 2 and 5. If you are connected to A-B, that is incorrect as these terminals are not filtered.

      Re: Suddenly Painfuly Slow!

Hi. Thanks for the replies. Here was me thinking I had it sussed as well

As it stands at the moment I've got the wires attached to the XTE as follows:

White with Blue stripes in 5

Orange with White stripes in 3

Blue with White stripes in B (think this is possibly the wire for the house phone that also uses the XTE)

Have I totaly knackered this? Should the Orange with White stripes be in 2?

      Thanks for the guidance people.

      Re: Suddenly Painfuly Slow!

Ok I'm now wired up as Steve suggests and this is what I'm getting from the test socket using the standard sky supplied filter:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 13308 kbps 945 kbps
Line Attenuation 33.0 db 16.9 db
Noise Margin 7.2 db 15.4 db

If it's any use this is what I'm getting with the XTE wired up as suggested above:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 10064 kbps 945 kbps
Line Attenuation 33.0 db 16.9 db
Noise Margin 7.0 db 15.2 db

Am I on the right track? As ever, not taking your help for granted, very much appreciated!!

It's good to see that you are finally geting ot the bottom of your speed problems. Mine seem to have just begun, with some random line testing by Sky. On checking my broadband account, trying to find some answers, I noticed that the statement " line connection testing completed 6/10/10". Up until this I had had no problems at all!!

      Re: Suddenly Painfuly Slow!

It looks like the faceplate may be faulty. To confirm it, do the following - Take the wires off the no. 3 terminal on the faceplate. Take your stats, if the speed result is lower than the Test socket, remove the other wires on the faceplate, check that all of your extensions have no dial tone, plug the faceplate back in and take your stats. If the speed is still lower than the Test socket, the faceplate is faulty and should be returned to the supplier.

Concerning the wiring, check what colours are connected to the 2 and 5 terminals in your extensions. The same coloured wires should be connected to the same numbered terminals on the faceplate. The number 3 terminal does not need to be wired, just tuck the wires back out of the way.

      Re: Suddenly Painfuly Slow!

      Thanks for the reply Tom.

I've just done exactly what you suggested with the wiring. The configuration of the 2 and 5 wires matches exactly with the upstairs extension. After checking the wires the stats I'm getting through the XTE and the test socket are exactly the same. Is this even possible?

Sorry for being a pest but when I could possibly get up to 16m it's hard to settle when that carrot has been dangled in front of your nose

Yes, they should be. As long as you are getting the 13Mb+ through the faceplate, that's fine. To be honest with your attenuation at 33, that is quite a good speed. To get 16 Mb you would need an excellent external line, which you don't have.
