Steve you're a star mate. Going to ring them first thing tomorrow and if they can sort it in 15 mins like the guy in that thread I'll be extatic!

I'm running the 2.8 firmware, not sure how long I've been running it for but if I can use that as an excuse for them to look into my speed issues then I will.

I'll let you know the outcome mate

      Re: Suddenly Painfuly Slow!

      A quick update as promised.

Just this second come off the phone to a bloke at Sky. He was very helpful and nice enough but get the feeling I may have just been fobbed off.

Told him about the router and I said that I was acheiving over 13Mb before the upgrade in firmware.

He pretty much just stated that, yes, I was syncing at 13Mb for a few days but DLM decided that my line couldn't handle it and pegged me back at just over 9mb.

I thought that if he's not going to bite about the router firmware and look into it further then I'm onto a loser so I wimped out, thanked him for his help, and ended the call.

Should I have been a wee bit more forceful and pressed the issue or do you think I'm just chasing my tail here? Worth another stab with a different advisor and a new white lie maybe??

      Re: Suddenly Painfuly Slow!

I think he was probably fobbing himself off too as he had not a clue as to what has happened. If you had been syncing at 13Mb with a margin of 1 or 2 dbs, then I would say DLM had knocked it back, but as you were very near the default I don't think this happened. Dropping 1Mb maybe, but not over 3 Mb. Something happened to your line and I'm afraid we will never know what.

You can try again, but with your noise margin it will take one of Harry Potter's disciples to get you back to 13Mb.

      Re: Suddenly Painfuly Slow!

Oh well, the big man upstairs loves a tryer.

I managed in a call centre for many years so I can tell when I'm dealing with an advisor who'd rather be eating his pot noodle and doing the Cosmo quiz.

As I've said previously though, I'm very happy with what I now have considering what I had back in post #1!

Here's what things seem to have settled on:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 9211 kbps 1118 kbps
Line Attenuation 33.0 db 16.7 db
Noise Margin 6.1 db 8.5 db

Once again a big thanks for all the help and advice I've recieved fellas

Hi If you need to call Sky again you could say that you have just had a XTE-2005 Filtered Master Faceplate fitted. Also as Smithy99 says on post #89 you could ask Sky to manually configure the line.

With a noise margin of 6.1, there is not much to configure.

      Re: Suddenly Painfuly Slow!

Weighing up what both you guys have said I think there may be one final phonecall left in this......after all, as they say in this neck of the woods: Shy bairns get nowt!

Seems to be the case that it'll very much depends on who I get at the other end, how helpful they're feeling and if they're late for the bus or not.

In all seriousness though Isitme, any magic/secret/masonic words or phrases to mention to the advisor that may get me that manual configuration?

      Re: Suddenly Painfuly Slow!

As I said if your noise margin is that low, the only way they can configure it is down. I think you need a couple of dbs over the default of 7 before they would even consider it. I would give it a couple of weeks and see how your noise margin performs, before calling them.

No masonic words I'm afraid, if I told you them, I would have to kill you.
