      Exclamation Slow download speeds

      Hello,

From about 3 days ago I noticed that I was getting really slow download speeds. Before this, I was around 14mbps. Upon visiting MySky, I found that my broadband speed had been capped to 8mbps. Also, there had been line testing that finished on the 26th. So right now I'm basicly hitting around 7mbs according to my router. May I also add that I had hit my download usage limit and have gone over it but I am unsure on whether this would make Sky cap my download speed.

I see that you guys might need this information to see whether I can get higher speeds.

Connection Speed 7387 kbps 796 kbps
Line Attenuation 31 db 16 db
Noise Margin 11 db 8 db

Also, would upgrading to the unlimited package instantly uncap me if I have been capped due to going over my usage?

      Thank you

      Re: Slow download speeds

It is nothing to do with your download allowance, somewhere you have a fault and this has caused your speed to be capped.

      Re: Slow download speeds

      Hi again,

These are the stats from the test socket. There is a slight speed increase but could this just be luck?

Connection Speed 7996 kbps 753 kbps
Line Attenuation 31 db 16 db
Noise Margin 7 db 9 db

      Thanks

PS There is a microfilter in place however we have an extention wire running from the socket to the filter.

      Re: Slow download speeds

The extension will likely be hindering the connection. Remove it and just plug a filter directly into the test socket with the short grey dsl cable Sky supplied. Post up your stats after that and hopefully we'll see some improvement.

      Re: Slow download speeds

Hello again, sorry late reply. Cant test User05's idea yet but will later. It would seem that the download speed has hit 8mbs through the test socket with the extention. I dont see how trying it without the extention could give you any more information unless your looking at attenuation and line margin.

      Thanks once again.

      Re: Slow download speeds

SNRs will likely rise and attenuation drop. Telephone extension cables are notorious for messing with dsl. Run a longer ethernet cable if need be.

      Re: Slow download speeds

Right, will check that in a short while. I have noticed that when refreshing my router page, it goes from 8189kbps to 0kbps.. Is this just the router playing up or is this actually whats happening due to the extention wire?

      Re: Slow download speeds

Quite possibly the extension cable is causing that.

      Re: Slow download speeds

There is a case on the forum where a users attenuation went from 63 dbs to the low 30s simply by getting rid of the telephone extension cable. I will have to have a look for the post as it is a good example of just how much a telephone extension cable can harm a connection. Unfortunately too many blame Sky, BT, their router, or anything but their own crappy set up.
