They have to as they are a company and they are sharing the recording with a third party who was not a person who was making/taking the call and they are also recording it remotely.

The law for individual members of the public is less strict.

Do you remember that recording of Gordon Brown talking to the mother of a dead soldier?

Did she get taken to court even though it was all over the main press.

A spokesperson for the Information Commissioner’s Office said: “Neither the Data Protection Act 1998 or the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR) prevent someone from recording a personal telephone conversation.

Secretly recording a telephone call without consent breaches trust but is not breaking the law.

No but if I was the Sky agent and you recorded me without my consent I'd be looking for an injunction to have the call deleted as I didn't give my permission to be recorded. I've done it in the past and I'd do it again.

I have NO issues with being recorded so long as it's with my consent - customers who said can they record it were greeted with a happy 'yes'. Those who tried it without my consent got hung up on - simple as that

Going with what you're saying I could just sit on the phone and record my conversations with customers so long as I don't share them. Which is just wrong on a number of levels

But you were at work so not a member of the public and you told the person it may be recorded or at least the recorded message did.

Did you take out a complaint with your employeer for recording all your calls? Of course not.

If the Information Commissioner’s Office says it is OK that is good enough for me.

      Lets agree to disagree.

No, I made a complaint about the customer recording me! And had it upheld! I have no problem with work recording it as it's known that Sky do it

BritBrat is right, it is legal to record calls for personal use without informing the other party providing you don't intend to publish them. Eg see BBC NEWS | Magazine | What are the rules on taping phone calls?

Yeah so they can't be used to prove something was said as the recording is just between you and the person being recorded
