Thumbs down New SKY BB Unlimited customer.. regretably

      Hello,

I recently signed up for SKY broadband's unlimited package as it was the most affordable and my parents have it with a good stable connection. However, they have been nothing but trouble (i'll skip this part), anyway after finally receiving my router 5 days after the activation date they've only gone and mucked it up again. After receiving the router this morning i set it all up to discover the downloads at 288 kbps and uploads at 512 kbps, which seems a common problem from reading round the forum. This obviously isn't right and due to their delay in sending the router i am fast running out of time to cancel within the 8 day period, SKY believe that the fault is with my router after testing the line & ascertaining that i should bee getting in the region of 3500kbps. The thing is i just simply don't believe them and feel i am being fobbed off into waiting for a new router so that my 8 day cancellation period runs out.

      So basically:

      - Do speeds of 288/512 indicate a broken router? (Why would it work at all?)

      - Is there anything i can do to rectify the problem as my faith in SKY is non-existant?

      - I don't have a spare router to test the line.

Sorry for the essay, thanks if you made it this far

Post full stats, there's nothing on here to suggest your connection speed is a common fault...also connect to your test socket, if you have one, and post stats from there as well

      Router StatisticsSystem Up Time: 00:25:04
Here are the statistics from the "show statistics" tab, sorry they aren't easily readable.

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 3476 4080 0 731 2271 00:24:03
      LAN 8440 6877 0 4603 1063 00:25:04
      WLAN 441 204 0 37 14 00:23:55
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 256 kbps 512 kbps
      Line Attenuation 63.5db 31.5db
      Noise Margin

In terms of common problem i meant that others have had problems being at exactly the same speeds (288kbps), although SKY assure me i am definately on the right package.

      Thanks for the help.

Re: New SKY BB Unlimited customer.. regretably

Your stats don't include the noise margin unfortunately. The 63.5db downstream attenuation, suggests that your poor speed are at least in part due to the length of your line.

Try the router in the BT Test socket if you have one, to see if your stats improve:- ::. Kitz - Improve your adsl connection speed .::

      Where is the Noise margin?

It looks like you are on a test speed, but without the full stats we can't really say, but you are never going to get a fast connection.

Test speed was 128kbps up/down...I reckon (s)he's either majorly capped OR on a terrible line...already on GDMT as well

Re: New SKY BB Unlimited customer.. regretably

The noise margins are 6.7db 11.0db respectively.

Guessing i have been a victim of good salesmanship then by being told 6.5mbps on my letter and 3.5-4.0mbps earlier on the phone

Thanks Fuzzy Logic, i'll have a go.

Re: New SKY BB Unlimited customer.. regretably

I thought i was capped to be honest and mentioned it numerous times (after reading around on here) and they deny it. They have also tested the line and claim i should be getting 3500-4000kbps, it is a brand new line as well in a new block of flats so i really can't see there being a problem with the wiring.

Could it be the router then like they claim or is that just a temporary solution to stop me ringing for a few days while it is in the post?

Re: New SKY BB Unlimited customer.. regretably

Going by that noise margin you're not capped but on either a VERY bad line or a long one...connecting to the test socket if you have one will show where the issue lies...

And block of flats tend to have some of the WORST wiring in them...
