      slow download speed

Hi, not too sure about computers/terms used but I am having slow internet download speeds.

I have connected my sky router today (D-Link one) and these are my stats.

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 378 kbps 760 kbps
      Line Attenuation 46.0db 26.9db
      Noise Margin 8.6db 8.0db

Is there any way to get it faster?

I am with sky unlimited at the moment.

      Thanks.

      Re: slow download speed

Try your test socket if you have one, that's a bad line otherwise as you should on about 5-6Mbps with that attenuation

      Re: slow download speed

Thanks for your reply, I will give it a go in the test socket tomorrow (behind the faceplate from what I have read). If my test socket is showing slow speeds still do you have any ideas?

      Thanks

      Re: slow download speed

It may still show a slow speed if you have been capped. What you are looking for is a large increase in the noise margin. If you are not capped you should see an immediate speed increase.

If you don't see an improvement it means either your line or the router is faulty. Let's take one step at a time.

      Re: slow download speed

Hi, hope people will still be reading this, I have plugged the router into the test point and my stats are now -

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 384 kbps 796 kbps
      Line Attenuation 45.0db 26.4db
      Noise Margin 33.4db 11.5db

I am sorry I don't understand what this means so would be great if somebody could tell me

      Thanks everyone.

      Re: slow download speed

      Original - Noise Margin 8.6db 8.0db
      New - Noise Margin 33.4db 11.5db

There's your issue - HUGE noise problems...once sorted Sky can then up your speed

Basically means something your end (internally) is causing a huge noise issue and knocking your speed down. I'm in work so can't go into the whole ins and outs BUT if you buy a filtered faceplate you'll be sorted

      Re: slow download speed

yeah I saw the big change there. So if I plug the filtered face plate into the main socket this will help? I used the filter sky gave me and this didn't help. I appreciate that your at work and that you replied so don't worry if you are unable to reply again.

      Thanks.

      Re: slow download speed

Were the new stats just from the master socket or from the test socket (with the front panel removed)? If just from the master then it's the extension wiring in the property causing the noise. If it was from the test socket then it's either the front panel or the wiring from it causing the noise.

If you're in the test socket you'd need to buy a filtered faceplate (either the XTE-2005 from ADSLNation or the NTE-2000/2005 from run-IT-direct) and fit it to the master socket (replacing the panel you removed) to have the wiring correct your end and then a quick call to Sky would get the speed up

      Re: slow download speed

Just to expand on IWNTE's comments, the big difference in your noise margin shows that you internal wiring is interfering badly with your ADSL signal. As suggested the best way to fix this is to fit and use a filtered faceplate - XTE-2005 Filtered Master Faceplate - ADSL Nation

When you fit the faceplate you must plug the router into it, all your other sockets will be dead as far as broadband is concerned. If having the router in this position is not convenient, there are 4 things you can do 1. Use a longer ADSL cable, this can be up to 15m long without have too much effect on your speed, provided it is of good quality. 2. Use a longer ethernet cable, this can be up to about 100m long without adversely effecting your signal. 3. Set up a Homeplug network, using your power circuit. 4. Use wireless. I would say avoid the last if you live in an old house with real walls, especially if you are an online gamer.
