      Changing line rental providers

before switching to sky for line rental, I was with BT and used to get around 14.5MB

After switching to sky for line rental, the speed overtime kept dropping and now im getting 10.9MB. Upload is good, 1.2MB

I am entitled to switch line rental providers as its been over 12 months switching to sky.

for people who have switched AWAY/FROM sky line rental - have you noticed your speed being better or the same?

If you do this you'll have to cancel the broadband as well, you may also have to pay a BT reconnection fee.

      Re: Changing line rental providers

why would I need to cancel the broadband? anyone can subscribe to the sky broadband. I was with BT landline with a sky broadband before I migrated to the sky line rental.

there is also no reconnection fee for BT.

Yes but the problem is that you are connected to a single box in the exchange which supplies both your broadband and phone line. When BT pull your line out of this box and connect it back into there own equipment the broadband connection would in effect be terminated. Sky would then have to reorder broadband to be connected up to your line via BTs equipment.

hmm. wasnt aware of this and I asked BT and they didnt say anything about this. I would have thought the process would be the same where when you transfer from BT to sky - you dont get downtime.

      Re: Changing line rental providers

Did you switch to Sky before their SVBN network? Did you opt out of going on the Sky network and stayed on BT? (You can check by dialling 17070, if you get your phone number read back to you it's a BT line)

If you still have a BT line then they probably won't charge for taking back the line but it's unlikely you would see any difference in speed staying with Sky broadband. Speedtest speeds vary a lot, is the drop really that noticeable or are you just looking at headline figures?

      Re: Changing line rental providers

ok, let me tell you the full story.

I got sky broadband and TV. The phone line rental was with BT.
I then saw that sky were doing line rental cheaper than BT, so I switched to sky for line rental also. it made sense.
Then after a few months they had this SVBN switchover thing, wasnt sure what it really was but was suppose to apperently make the system "easier" for everyone.
I then noticed that my line speed dropped from 14.5MB to 13.5MB and ever since then its been going down to now 10.9MB. This is looking at the ROUTER stats.

but with BT, I never had this problem. the line number (telephone number) IS from BT.

BT said that the speed I should be getting regardless with ISP would be 14MB, which sounds correct, as this is what it was before I moved to sky for the phone line.

yes, switched to sky before they had this SVBN thing.

      Re: Changing line rental providers

If you dial 17070 on SVBN, you'll get your number read back to you by ZOE.

If it's the BT test facility, then it's BT line rental/WLR.

      Re: Changing line rental providers

Many have found that when you move to the SVBN, Sky claim your phone number as their own and will not release it back to you when you leave. This may not effect you if you don't use the landline for voice calls, but it could apply to others wishing to leave Sky rental.

You can get a corded phone for about a fiver and it is worth having one, as your calls to Sky support are free during your 'free time'. A bit cheaper than using a mobile
