New D-LINK DSL-2640S local only connection on one Vista pc

I just received a new D-LINK DSL-2640S router replacing my netgear one which was dropping connection all the time but now i seem to be having problems with this and after hours talking to sky, they told me they couldnt fix it.

I have my desktop pc connected to it wired and everything is fine.
I have another pc wirelessly connected fine and my ipod's connect to it fine.

Then the problem is my laptop which connects to the router but wont connect to the internet and is stuck on local only.

All computers are running Vista, and i have even factory restored the laptop to eradicate the chance of any dodgy settings.

The laptop will connect and gain internet access if i use no decryption or WEP. As soon as i set it to wpa/wpa2 mixed mode i lose access and get limited connectivity again.

If i plug my old router back in, this laptop will happily connect to wpa along with my other computers.

I have also updated all the drivers for my network adapter and am now stuck either using WEP or reverting back to my old router.

      Any help would be appreciated.

      Thank's,

      Paul.

Try giving your laptop adaptor a fixed IP this sometimes works. Go to the LAN card IP Properties and tick the' Use this IP address' and enter
      IP address...........192.168.0.100.
      Subnet..................255.255.255.0
      Gateway...............192.168.0.1

      DNS server
      ..........208.67.222.222
      Alternate...............208.67.220.220

vista has a famous local only problem and the dlink routers are not the best in compatability terms.

so basically, there is no workaround, dlink routers+vista can easily create issues

Re: New D-LINK DSL-2640S local only connection on one Vista pc

Finally managed to fix it, honestly i must have spent 5 hours plus trying to solve the problem and im kicking myself now it was so simple.

I was using my driver genious 2009 professional to update the drivers (thought it was great untill now) and it turns out it wasnt updating to the correct driver. So much for saying all my drivers are up to date, and i paid for this rubbish as it was recommended.

Went onto my computer manufacturers website and downloaded their driver and it connected straight away no problems.

Hate it when things like this happen as ive had earache off the mrs the amount of time ive spent tinkering about with it. Dont like letting things beat me as theres always a solution and it would bug me forever more if i didnt fix it.

Thank's again for taking time out to try and help me. Really is appreciated. I only signed up here for help but seems like a pretty good site with good users and information and will certainly stick around.

Re: New D-LINK DSL-2640S local only connection on one Vista pc

It was possibly due to the router using WPA2, which your drivers could not handle. I always advise going to either the laptop or adapter manufacturers site for the latest drivers. MS and 3rd party driver applications do not always find the best driver as you have found.
