QOS Router in front of sky router?

Just got sky broadband, very happy with it, 14+mb speeds, just under 1mb upload. However my flatmate is always playing games which seems to reduce the speed of my connection quite a bit.

I know the sky routers are locked down and I cant really do anything with them in terms of QOS or managing bandwidth, but can I put another router in front of the sky one to implement QOS or something similar so we can share the bandwidth equally. 7MB each?

For example before he came in with my 2pc's running (some torrents with throttled download schedule during the day), it was sitting at around 35ms for a constant ping to google. Now he is home and using xbox and his laptop its up to between 150 and 250ms for pings.

What can I do that works out fair?

As long as you don't have the new D-link Sky router you can just get your password out of it and use any router you want.

      Well that's sods law

There was a thread on here a while back that had an ethernet hub/splitter that had QOS on it, may be cheaper and easier to setup than piggybacking the router.

Re: QOS Router in front of sky router?

Yeah just my luck, I have a D-Link DSL-2740R which is spare, So i guess I could use that, just need to know if the theory behind the idea would work... i.e 2740R as the wireless access point with QOS and using the Sky router as its default gateway to gain internet access?

QoS doesnt usually work unless you connect the sky router up to a cable routers wan port. Just linking up the ethernet ports on two adsl routers doesnt usually work.
