      Wireless internet sharing help

      Hey guys

Basically here is the situation. I am living in a Flat where i have internet available only via a Ethernet port, which if i stick the Ethernet cable in from there to my laptop i get Internet access.

Now i decided to go out and buy a Router with the idea that if the Ethernet cable goes from that socket into the Router i can share it wireless.

In other words make it work like a switch.

So far when i connect the Ethernet cable into the router and another cable into the computer i get internet access however its not sharing the internet wireless.

So if anyone can pleasese help to solve this.

      Thanks so much.

Are you absolutely sure that the terms of your internet provider/landlord do not dictate no use of routers in the socket? It's quite common for them to say you cant do that. I doubt a router would work in this as usually the sockets have a fixed dynamically assigned IP address and therefore you cant simply turn DHCP off and get an IP assigned to two devices.

hmmm well we got wireless access but the signal strength is so low that its near enough impossible to get internet . So the only way would be this:S..

Secondly when a cable goes from the socket to router and router to laptop it works so shouldn't it work wireless too somehow?

Im sure i can explain the situation if a problem was to arise

Your not understanding me, it SHOULD work if you run just one device on it through a router, it wont however work if you then try and connect that wirelessly because of the usual 1 IP restrictions wireless adapter would be a different device. Only way around that would be a cable router doing the routing where you've got your socket connected into the WAN port on that.
Bear in mind if your not supposed to be using a router and/or multiple devices from that socket then they will probably cut you off.

hmmmm i kind of understand in other words the socket is limited to only assign one ip address:S which it gives to the router making my laptop a second device if done wirelessly...

So the only way is to get a cable router , hmmm guess ill go and return the router as there's no point me having it then

The fact that you are able to connect by ethernet through the router to the internet connection should mean that the wireless should work. It is no different from ethernet, just an alternate way to connect to the router. I suspect the wireless in the router you have is not working properly or you need to change the channel, or you need to update the wireless adapters drivers.
