Very poor downstream speed since joining Sky

I recently re-subbed to Sky onto the unlimited package. Here are my line stats:-

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 384 kbps 358 kbps
      Line Attenuation 69.0db 43.6db
      Noise Margin 5.6db 11.0db

According to the BT checker my line is about 6km so I'm not expecting to get a decent speed but prior to Sky I could achieve anything from 500-1000 kbps depending on the time of day.

I'm using the filters and cables supplied by Sky and it doesn't make any difference which socket I use or even if I unplug all the phones. Unfortunately I don't have a test socket to try. Router is the new D-Link.

Should I be calling customer services or is there anything else I can do to improve things such as premium filters/cables or such like?

You could call sky and ask them to try your line on g.dmt. Other than that the current setup isn't gonna take anything more.

Re: Very poor downstream speed since joining Sky

Is it due to my poor line attenuation? I'm sure it used to be at about 63.

It could well be but I reckon there could be an issue internally too. Your SNR is too low. You say there is no test socket. Are your sockets wired from some sort of junction box somewhere?

Re: Very poor downstream speed since joining Sky

I had a friend look at them and he said they were all going back to the socket in the master bedroom. However there is no test socket there, it just looks the same as all the others and only has the wires inside.

Could it be that I'm now on adsl2+ and before I was on G.DMT?

Also, are the XF filters and protected modem cable worth having?

Re: Very poor downstream speed since joining Sky

Your line will almost certainly be on adsl2+. As rule of thumb most longer lines do better on g.dmt. Worth trying. I would also bin the sky supplied filters and get some of your own (each of my 3 sky filter cost me 1mb compared to the BT ones I had). You say you resubscribed to sky. Did they supply you with new equipment?

Re: Very poor downstream speed since joining Sky

Yes I have the new Sky router (D-link) and new filters.

I phoned Sky and apparently there is a test running on my line now (DMT?) so I have to wait a week or so. I've been with Sky about a month so I don't know why DMT would be running again?

Strangely my line attenuation has just dropped:-
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 384 kbps 608 kbps
      Line Attenuation 63.5db 31.5db
      Noise Margin 8.4db 10.0db

Is this possibly down to the time of day (10pm)?

Re: Very poor downstream speed since joining Sky

Could be they changed you to G.DMT, which does reduce the attenuation slightly. With those stats I would expect you to be able to attain 1mb as you appear to have about 1db of noise in reserve to up it.

Re: Very poor downstream speed since joining Sky

They most likely meant DLM. Tier 1's can rarely see the line code. DLM will be finished on your line as it has capped it at it's slowest setting (384kbps). I would phone up and badger on until they can get you to cst where someone will be able to fiddle around with the line.

Your noise margin went up quite a bit in those second set of stats. Did you change anything?

Re: Very poor downstream speed since joining Sky

Nope not a thing....I have seen it do this before but for no apparent reason.

I'll ask Sky to try changing me to G.DMT as you suggest. Thanks for the help
