      1st day - terrible speed!?!

      Hi all

Ive had sky broadband activated this morning (10am) and the speed reported at the router is awful!

Is this due to line training etc or something else?

I've checked SamKnows and im 1.2km from the exchange.
At my previous address I was a similar distance from the same exchange on the sky medium package and i got 9mb.

At this address im seeing the following stats tested at the Master Test Socket:

      Connection Speed
      -Downstream 4095 kbps
      -Upstream 605 kbps
      Line Attenuation
      -Downstream 44.0db
      -Upstream 22.7db
      Noise Margin
      -Downstream 8.3db
      -Upstream 16.0db

Any advice would be greatfully received.

      Thanks

      Mart

you will start off at 4 meg, you will be on DLM, it tests your line for 10 days then your speed will be set it the most stable speed, looking at your stats tho, your gonna end up getting around 5mbps, with your line attenuation you should get about 7mbps tho, but with your noise margin being 8db it doesnt look like your going to get much more speed, as the target SNR is 7db.

have a look at your noise margin in the morning, as the line will run better in the morning and you want the downstream SNR to be a bit higher, if it stays at 8db your not going to get much more speed im afraid.

      Damn, thats pretty bad!

What is the reason for the poor attenuation and SNR?

And why did Sky state that they have determined that I will be able to receive between 10 and 20mb?
I wouldnt mind if it was 10mb but 5mb is pretty pants!

      Thanks in advance guys

What is the reason for the poor attenuation and SNR?

the attenuation is the length of your line, the lower the db the shorter the line.
It's not poor, as some people will have an attenuation of 60db, they will be lucky to get 2 meg. but its not great either because your never going to be able to get over 10mbps on your line. I have the same attenaution as you 44db and im getting 7.5mbps so you should get around the same as me, if not then your line quality isnt as good or your internal wiring is causing you to lose speed, your SNR could be at 8db becuase its at night and theres a lot of interference, it gets caused at night time through street lights and stuff like that, so just hope in the morning your SNR goes up over 10db, if it does you will get around 6 meg hopefully.

your line at your new address may be around the same distance away, but could be taking a differant route to your exchange causing you to get less speed.

a lot better, that means you have 3db spare that can turn in to more speed.
if your speed doesnt increase much after 10 days of running DLM, then phone sky and see if they will configure your line, i would ask them to try ADSL1 aswell 1st as this may give you a better speed, ADSL2+ may give you a lower speed.
you could phone them up now if you want and say DLM hasnt improved my speed and ive been told its supposed to re sync my line at 2am and it hasn't changed, this is if you dont want to wait 10 days for your speed to go up. They will then manually configure your line for you.

      Good morning guys

      Thanks for your help.
This morning I checked and I have a Noise Margin of 7.2 but a downstream speed of 8mb
I ran a quick speed test and I received a 6mb download speed.

      I'll keep you posted.....................

      Cheers
