Poor broadband connection effects xbox etc..

      Hi,

My husband has recently changed to Sky broadband from Virgin Media. Since we have changed it has been one long headache changing over.

Now we have the sky broadband finally after 2 1.2 months waiting.

My husband has opted for the unlimited package and was getting great results from Virgin, however he can no longer play on xbox live. The game lags and spoils game play. I can not use youtube at times due to poor connection.

We live 2.2 miles away from the hub, possibly closer. I have done the statistics here is the results.

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1696 kbps 800 kbps
      Line Attenuation 59.0db 31.5db
      Noise Margin 5.3db 7.0db

This does not mean a thing to me, I have no idea if this good or bad. What the measurements should be.

We have rung Sky and they said they have changed a few things and somebody will call back. Surprise no one has called us. I am fed up being on the phone for ages to be no where closer to fixing the problem. My husband will be dissapointed if this is not changed, as he can no longer play on live with the xbox.

Is there anything we can do?

      Many thanks,
      Michelle

You're a long way from the exchange, so you're never going to get a 'great' speed, but you should perhaps do a fair bit better than that. Use the following link to plug the router into the test socket - only plug just a microfilter (the two-way white boxes that say 'adsl', 'phone' and 'modem') with the short grey dsl cable that Sky supplied and post up the stats from there.

How to test your ADSL in the Master Test Socket

minie you could try opening the ports for xbox live if you havent done so this improves it abit cause the other day my xbox was on moderate level meaning it would be difficult to play games etc and once i opend the ports boom im in pretty fast go to port forwarding .com i think or .net or something it is type it in google

Opening ports is not going to help until the speed and noise margin are improved. The only way to get an improvement is to plug into the Test socket as suggested and post the stats from there.
