That is a very good speed for the attenuation, but remember you will loose between 10-15% on overheads. This will give you an action download speed of around 8000kbps, which equates to a transfer rate of around 1Mb per second. Do it with wireless and you will loose even more, especially if you are using the wrong channel. You could download Issider from the link below, use it to find the channels in use in the area and set your router channel to one as far from those in use as possible.

Do a speed test at Sky User - Broadband Speed Tester and one at thinkbroadband :: UK Broadband Speed Test. Also download a 100Mb test file from here thinkbroadband :: Download Test Files and post the results from all tests.

Speed tests are always better done with a wired connection to get the true speed available.

Re: 9mb at router but very slow speeds.

tried Issider, no other wireless connections around so dont think problem is there.

      Skyuser speedtest = 30 September, 2010 16:21:45 2464 Kbps 667 Kbps

      Thinkbroad 100mb file= 7min 8sec 239kb/sec

Tried it with a wired connection (with cable trailing thru the house!!) and getting a good 7.5-8mb speed.

Any ideas why he losing so much when on wireless??

You could try updating the wireless adapters drivers, this can often make a big difference. Try channel 13 on the router.
