      Sky estimated line speed

      Hi,

I am moving from Be Unlimited and I currently sync in the region of 12-14meg depending on which noise margin profile I opt for.

When I ordered Sky, I was advised that my line can expect a max speed in the region of 5meg...! Can I just take that advice with a pinch of salt and expect my line to sync around the same speed as with Be? I have a Billion 7402nx router, so was actually hoping my sync speed could be even better due to the conexant chipset (non SVBN line). BT's broadband site also suggests a speed in the region of 5-6meg...

      Thanks!

In theory you should be able to get similar sync rates with any adsl provider. Can you get your attenuation and noise margin figures from your current router while it is in sync and post them here? We should be able to guess at your possible speed from those figures.

You should get around the same with sky, probably slightly less as their setting are a little more conservative. This should be able to be improved though if you are using your own router and can mess with the s/n margin.
I went the other way from Sky to O2 and O2 gives slightly better results, though its fairly academic in real terms.

      Re: Sky estimated line speed

Hi the downstream attenuation is around 37db, although the billion router does seem to be higher than the netgear I have previously used that suggested it was 32db. Upstream is 14db. Current noise margin profile is 3db. Think i lose a couple of meg if I move to 6db.

Any chance I can avoid the DLM?

Sky's target SNRs are 7db. DLM's initial training period cannot be avoided, either.

My attenuation is 33db downstream and i'm syncing at 14.7 mbps. you should expect close to that from the master socket.

actually, telephone88, you're an exception...the majority on that attenuation get about 10-12Mbps

In that case then I must be even more of an exception with an attenuation of 42db

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 12988 kbps 1157 kbps
Line Attenuation 42.5 db 18.5 db
Noise Margin 7.30 db 8.0 db

Absolutely! Must be a brand new, straight line there...
