      Interesting BT versus Sky comparison

      Hi

Have Sky unlimited package but only get 3.5 Mbs download due to line attenuation and some noise (despite using ADSL sockets and cable).

Geezer two doors away now uses BT and gets 18Mb! All other things being equal (he's probably 20 yards closer to the exchange!!) the only explanation seems to be that BT have used fibreoptic from the exchange to the cabinet which only benefits their broadband customers and everyone esle is left with the old copper stuff.

We were told ages ago that our exchange was one of those being piloted for faster speeds by Sky but we've heard nothing for ages. I was then told subsequently by someone on this forum that line attenuation ruled out any improvements anyway.

Hope you can see why I'm confused.

      Stats below.

      Cheers

      Longshanks

Yea your stats won't allow for a lot more. Tried the test socket? Even with a perfect internal setup you aren't gonna get what your fella 2 doors down is getting. Fibre is just on another level.

Sky employees and a few select exchanges are the only trials currently in operation. Register your interest at https://www.skyhighspeedbb.com/. Other than that it doesn't seem to be moving on in any leaps or bounds.

going by that attenuation you're on a 3.5-4km line...your neighbour's line might go a quicker route to the exchange

The OP says 'it seems Fibre Optic' - doesn't say it IS fibre optic...if it is Fibre, then yes that's the explanation

18mb is a pretty poor speed as fibre goes though!

It depends on how far the house is from the Cabinet.

Re: Interesting BT versus Sky comparison

      Many thanks for these.

The cabinet is round the corner.

Would be extremely suprised if the neighbours house took a different route to the exchange but you never know!!

I appreciate the diff between fibre optic and copper cable so what I was getting at was how would good ole BT be able to upgrade an individual customers line from the exchange to the cabinet in a way which restricted the improvement to that line.

If the neighbour ditched BT as his ISP would they then dismantle the fibre optic or will he now get those speeds with other ISPs?

We are BT customers as far as the phone is concerned but SKY is our ISP.

Just don't understand the technology here.

      Thanks again

      Longshanks
