Downloading for Newsgroups causing ADSL disconnection

Not sure how this is happening but, after the last couple of evenings I have been dowloading various Linux ISOs from the newsgroups. This isn't normally a problem I get full speed etc,

However recently I have noticed, I lose my wireless connection shortly after the download begins. (tested on Wired) I then went to check the router and noticed the ADSL light on the router is Orange.

This seems to be only happening when I am downloading from the newsgroups?

My noise margin is currently at 7.2 for the downstream and 9.5 for the upstream.

      Any Ideas?

      Cheers

Try a wire, it sounds like you have wireless interference.

You could also try changing the channel number the router is on, start at 13 and work down.

Re: Downloading for Newsgroups causing ADSL disconnection

Used Inssider I'm using a channel that no other wireless is on. Also occurrs on Wired.

The noise margin does look near the 7 mark. I recently ran a small extension from the master socket into another room. the noise Margin was then 7.1 downstream. I have temporarily plugged the router back into the master socket. The Noise margin is now at 7.2

Perhaps the fact that I am maxing out my line is causing the ADSL to lose sync with the Exchange. I have found the only way for it re-sync is to power cycle the router.

I suppose my next test would be to download a large file from the web (from a fast site) to see if it the line drops again. That would rule out the newsgroups at least.

I sometimes find that maxing out my connection on newsgroups causes the same thing, I have overcome this by dialing the connection down by half a meg on the download client.

      Interesting that i'm not alone

It never used to be a problem, but I will certainly give it a go tonight and may see what happens if I throttle the speed back to half.

I contacted Sky and they could not see any outages at the Exchange, They have also tweaked my line and I am now apparently syncing at 18Mb rather than 16.5Mb.

Can't confirm this until I get home. I will leave the router in the master socket for a week to see how it fairs then try the extension again.

      Thanks for the replies.

If they've increased the line sync speed then moving to the extension will lead to more issues...keep it in the master

Re: Downloading for Newsgroups causing ADSL disconnection

Good point, I will leave it in the master for now, I installed an extension because there is no power socket close to the router, so I currently have a four-way running across the hall way floor. I can't keep it there forever, my missus would go mad

The noise magin was on.1 difference when in the extension. I'll post back after a few days.
