How do I replace my sky netgear router with DIR-655? Help!

Okay.. I really need some help!

I decided to try and replace my sky router mainly because its wifi coverage was very poor. So I bought a D-Link DIR-655 router. I followed the instructions on the CD but was unable to set it up. The internet light never came on.

Please give me a step by step guide on how to set it up.

Re: How do I replace my sky netgear router with DIR-655? Help!

      2 options

1.Use your sky router for internet access and disable it's wireless, take an Ethernet cable and link both routers together set your new D-links wireless settings and also set it to be a DHCP relay. Also remember to set a static ip address for the d-link, i.e. 192.168.0.2

      or

      2. Use the tool on this site that generates your sky username and password, setup the router. You might need to set the correct ADSL settings which are

      Modulation: ADSL2+

      VPI: 0
      VCI:38

Thank you for the quick reply maximus.

I already have the username and password from the sky router but I have no idea how to adjust the settings.

Go with option 1, i.e. linking both routers together with your d-link becoming an access point.

If you really want to use your new router you will need to apply the settings I posted beforehand.

On a side note why such an expensive router?

the dlink dir655 is a cable oruter the internet port is a ethernet port i think not a modem port liek for adsl modem routers so you cant replace the sky router with that you can use it as a access point instead but if you want to replace the sky router altogether then you need a dsl router modem combo

      For Internet Access:
      • Cable or DSL Modem
      • Subscription with an Internet Service Provider (ISP)

Taken form d-links website, he might have the dsl version.

Re: How do I replace my sky netgear router with DIR-655? Help!

Some people on this forum seriously need to learn what they're talking about before posting!
The DIR-655 is a CABLE ONLY router, there is no version with a DSL modem inbuilt. To use it on dsl you need to either use your existing sky router as the modem (instructions below) or purchase an ADSL ethernet modem such as the Linksys AM200.

To use your existing router as the modem do the following:
      On the Sky router:
      Switch Wireless OFF
Set DHCP Off and IP address of router to 192.168.1.1
      Set DMZ to 192.168.1.2

      On the D-link Dir-655:
Set Internet Connection Type: Static IP
Set internet connection IP to 192.168.1.2 and default gateway to 192.168.1.1
Leave all other settings re internet at default and save the settings

Connect an ethernet cable from the ethernet port #1 on the sky router to the wan port on the d-link. You should now be able to connect via the d-link without problems.

Re: How do I replace my sky netgear router with DIR-655? Help!

Also taken from the Dlink site
The D-Link Xtreme N™ Gigabit Router (DIR-655) is a 802.11n compliant device that delivers up to 14x faster speeds* and 6x farther range* than 802.11g while staying backward compatible with 802.11g devices. Connect the Xtreme N Gigabit Router to a cable or DSL modem and provide high-speed Internet access to multiple computers, game consoles, and media players. Create a secure wireless network to share photos, files, music, videos, printers, and network storage.
As Deadman says, this does not have a modem so can only connect to the internet through the Sagem. The username and password are not required. It can be piggy-backed on to the Sagem to make use of its superior features.

Edit. As you say Simon, but why change the address of the Sky router? Why not just change the Dlink's?

Re: How do I replace my sky netgear router with DIR-655? Help!

Basically isitme if you change the IP address range your modem router is in you should still be able to access its web interface through the other router. If they're both set to 192.168.0.1 the dlink would answer instead of passing it through to the sky router, thus making it impossible to check dsl stats, make config changes etc.

No you misunderstand me. I always advise leaving the Sky router as it is and change the address of the 2nd router to one in the Sky routers range. It amounts to the same thing, just one less setting to change.
