      Question Any Exeter Users? Advice needed

      Hi, looking to change from UKO as I want line rental+unlimited calls and fastest possible BB speed. Nothing wrong with UKO, but want to give BT the flick and save a bob or two. Would be interested to hear any comments about the Sky service from wwextr. Choices available are Be/O2 or Sky - the rest are not an issue. Don't do torrents/emule but use iplayer, Skype and Rapidshare for large 1GB+ downloads. Looking for good speeds, reliable connection and no slow downs!
      Many thanks in advance. Piotr
      PS have already tweaked face plate (ADSL Nation) and got a Billion 7800N Broadcom based router and have a rock solid UKO connection.

      Speed wise I wouldn't expect any changes as UKOL/Sky share the same network BUT moving to the SVBN may lead to a slight decrease in sync speed - I'd always personally keep BT as your rental provider and then get calls form elsewhere...

      Thanks for the quick reply! I hear what you are saying about staying with BT as line provider, it just seems easier (?) to have all your bills from one source. Of course if you then decide to change ISP it then becomes expensive - so I will dither a little longer as I'm awaiting the MAC. I see BE are now doing phones as well, but at a price. When I cost things out including line rental + caller ID which is the only extra I want:
      Sky = 23.50
      O2 = 26.25
      Be = 33.38
      The 'Which' report and other sources give O2 the nod over Sky, but like I say UKO have been good for me for the last two years on their 8Mb.
      Thanks again. Piotr
      Oh and I should say that there are cash back offers on these three from the Quidco website

      I'm on o2 and can't fault them, will be continuing with them when I move end of the month. I'll be keeping my phone with BT purely for convinience in case I ever have to leave o2 but I'm sure I could save money if I was with Sky for everything. I saw 25% with my GF being on o2 as it is and I don't mind paying the 30 a month to BT as we use our home phone a lot evenings/weekends

      What are your connection stats like at present out of interest?

      This is with my old D-Link DSL-2640B

      Downstream Upstream
      Rate (Kbps): 8000 768
      SNR Margin (dB): 10.1 18.0
      Attenuation (dB): 28.0 14.0

      Just did
      Pingtest.net - The Global Broadband Quality Test
      = 36
      I am trying to decide between O2 and Sky really, Be are OTT price wise but their support and enthusiastic user base is tempting. A mate in Oz just sent me details of what they pay, makes our costs look very reasonable - we Poms, apparently, like to whinge!

      I'd say you should be getting more but you're on GDMT as opposed to adsl2+ at present - on adsl2+ you'd get about 10-12Mbps on o2 I reckon, perhaps the same on Sky. Are you stats any different in the test socket?

      Yes the UKO connection is no longer cutting edge! Their Pro offering is still 20/m for Up to 8Mb download and up to 768K upload. You might think that as Sky is their parent that they would have updated their offering by now, or reduced the price to be competitive. Perhaps they are being allowed to die slowly.
      When I installed the new faceplate a couple of weeks ago there was very little in it between front and test sockets and I keep all connections short as poss. No other extensions as all wireless phones from one base station.
      XTE-2005 Filtered Master Faceplate - ADSL Nation
      No complaints about UKO though, staff all very good and the connection has been totally reliable. MAC generated within a day. Sorry to be leaving really but faster connections beckon.

      Well a few more hours research done. Since Sky do not let me use my nice shiny new Billion Bipac 7800N, I will be joining you on O2/Be. The clincher is the Which report that says the customer scores are 80% for O2, 76% for BE, and a mere 55% for Sky which pretty much tallies with the Thinkbroadband and Ispreview websites. User satisfaction was also higher than Sky for Plusnet, Eclipse, Nildram, Greenbee, and the Post Office. Worst was AOL with only 31%. Thanks for the input - I'm off to Quidco!

      It's always been known you have to use the Sky router as they've never given out the logins - T&C's state only use of the Sky router on Sky BB. That not to say you can't (unless you get a D-Link, in which case you can't at all at the moment)

      Why don't you consider plusnet as they have some decent offers on at the moment. Dominic Bowkett
