      Sky connect problems

Hope someone can help? Spent most of the morning on the phone to Sky about my speed problems.

My Sagem router shows 3488kbps downstream connection but in reallity I am getting next to nothing. Websites are taking ages to load and I can't even watch a Youtube clip.

I have tried the master socket and still the same results. I have also tried the Netgear router and again the same.

Sky then suggested I had a virus. So I reinstalled SL 10.6 and still the same connection speeds.

Sky have said there is nothing they can do because my router shows this 3488 figure.

I have done several speed tests which have come back at just over 100kbps and I have tried downloading a 10mb file from Apple which ran at 11.3kbps.

Nothing has changed at my end and nothing new has been installed on my mac. When I close safari and run netstat it only shows one item which is my local ip address.

I had no no problems until this weekend. Is the problem really at my end as Sky suggest?

      Re: Sky connect problems

It's probably not your fault. Sky Connect tends to be as you described. Try comparing evening/weekend speeds to morning/afternoon speeds and see if there's a difference.

Could you do a few tasks to help us get to the bottom of things?
      1) Glasnost: Test if your ISP is shaping your traffic - Hit 'Start Testing' and post a link to the completed results.

      2) Hit Start -> Run -> Type in 'cmd' -> Type in 'netstat'. To paste the results, right click and select 'Mark' on the menu. Simply drag across the text and right click again and you'll be able to paste it here.

      3) Run the speed test at thinkbroadband :: UK Broadband Speed Test twice; once with the default settings and again with the 'port 80' selected. Paste links to both the results here.

      Thanks.

      Re: Sky connect problems

Did you tell them you were running a Mac? If so, it says a lot for their knowledge when they say you had a virus.

There is not much point messing around with speedtests. Post your stats from the router as follows
How to get your router statistics

and do an Official BT Performance test here- Test Result

Your username is the LAN mac of your router without the colons followed by @SKYDSL.

      Post the results of both

      Re: Sky connect problems

The ONLY cure for Sky Connect is to move to a better ISP. If no other LLU suppliers are available to you then try Plusnet, Zen or IdNet.

I have already asked for my MAC code and was looking at idnet as they have no traffic policy.

I do have 1 LLU on my exchange but its TalkTalk and don't fancy them after reading how bad they are

Hi there has been a few connect Customer who have moved to TalkTalk LLU and I have not any bad reports back. The only thing is if you move to TalkTalk you have to change your phone and phone line over to TalkTalk.

      Re: Sky connect problems

Just to update. I logged in to BT speedchecker late last night and my speed was back to the normal 3mb.

Clearly a case of throttling as nothing my end had changed. Sky's tech support is the worst I have come across. They suggested internal wiring, virus, and some program running on my mac.

Anything rather than say they had capped my service. Anyway MAC code requested and goodbye the Sky connect

Don't fancy TalkTalk as I don't want to move my phone line. I appreciate they are my only LLU but think I will give ident a try.
