      Thumbs down Internet Connection Drops

Very recently during this week I have been having my Internet connection drop (seemingly) randomly but also regularly when using the phone.

I am on Sky Connect (Yes, I know, I want to move to O2's Premium package soon) and have been for over two years. In that time frame we have never had such frequent connection drops.

To be more specific, I have a NETGEAR DGN2000 router which displays 3 lights; wireless, Internet and DSL. What happens is the Internet Light turns off, the DSL light flashes for awhile, periodically going off, before continuing to flash until becoming solid which is when the internet light reappears and all is well. (As can be)

      I have my router stats:
      System Up Time 09:55:16
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 235087 436004 0 501 16693 09:54:43
      LAN 10M/100M 7934 0 0 50 0 09:55:12
      WLAN 11M/54M/270M 451070 247884 0 17062 681 09:55:01

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 6208 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 17.0 db 8.0 db
Noise Margin 15.8 db 20.0 db

      Master Socket -
      System Up Time 00:25:48
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 6032 8859 0 1087 6737 00:25:14
      LAN 10M/100M 688 0 0 119 0 00:25:44
      WLAN 11M/54M/270M 10956 7726 0 7455 1335 00:25:33

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 7648 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 17.0 db 8.0 db
Noise Margin 15.4 db 24.0 db

I have done nothing to the wiring or connections inside the house.
Not much difference in stats, other than about 1500kbps downstream and extra Upstream Noise Margin.

EDIT: Also, in this same time frame we have been getting crackle on the phone which usually is completely fine.

Any and all help will be massively appreciated.

Noise on line is a worry, is that happening when only the phone is in the test socket with nothing else on the line at all (Not even a filter)? Also have you tried a new filter? The line noise is probably linked to your drop outs, do your stats change at any time in the day?

      Re: Internet Connection Drops

Can you plug in your Sky router and try it to rule out a faulty router? There is something wrong as you should be syncing at 8128kbps. Try it in the Test socket with nothing plugged in except the router.

Can you check that all your other sockets have no dial tone when the faceplate is removed?

Noise on the phone when it is plugged into the Test socket on its own, should be reported to your rental provider.

      Not from test socket.

I did a quiet line test on the test socket and still got mild crackling.

I haven't tried a new filter, should I?, I have had this filter on for ages... Do they wear out?

      Re: Internet Connection Drops

He means once you've removed the master faceplate, go round to each extension socket you have plug a phone in and test if you have a dial tone (the noise you hear when you pick up the phone and dont dial anything).
If you have crackling in the test socket though you need to get onto the phone to whoever you pay your line rental to and report it for an engineer to come out and fix.

      Re: Internet Connection Drops

The drop in attenuation when connected to the test socket could indicate that there may be a broken wire or a poor connection to the socket you were using in the first test. However, as you also have cracking from the test socket, which would indicate an external fault, which can also cause random variations in attenuation, I would repeat the test in the original socket to see if the attenuation reading is consistently higher in that socket - if it is you'd need to check the connections to that socket. I'd also suggest unclipping the ring-wire if it is still connected (see guide here:- http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/socket.htm ).

EDIT: sorry, ignore my reply above, I just looked at the first set of tests you posted, and I see you attenuation had increased from the tests in your first post, so the change was probably caused by a fault on the BT line itself. As you can hear crackling in the test socket with nothing else connected, then contact whoever you pay line rental to as suggested in the post above.
