New to sky - very slow (1.25mb d/l)

Right, I've only had it 7 days (and I've heard they won't look into slow speeds before 10 days is up), but I've kept a log of daily results from Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test over the last week. The results aint great. I'm paying for 'up to 20mb' (whatever the higher package is) and I'm getting, on average, about 1.25/1.3mb download.

This is my exchange: SamKnows - Broadband Availability - Barnby Dun (SLBYD) Exchange

Doesn't the fact that Sky have LLU in my area mean I should be able to get much higher speeds??

Note: I'm using an extension socket upstairs at the moment. I'm yet to try it through the main socket, but that's on my to do list later on. Though I'd have thought it shouldn't be an issue with wiring etc. as my house is only 4 years old!

Here are stats on my machine/connection at the moment:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1443 kbps 605 kbps
Line Attenuation 48.5 db 28.2 db
Noise Margin 12.6 db 16.0 db

      Can anyone help?

You would be well advised to try your Test socket, the age of the wiring has little to do with it.

Re: New to sky - very slow (1.25mb d/l)

I'm posting this from the laptop downstairs on the master socket:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1531 kbps 605 kbps
Line Attenuation 49.5 db 28.1 db
Noise Margin 7.4 db 16.2 db

The downstream noise margin has dropped considerably (what does this mean?), but not a lot else seems to have happened.

The exchange mapper on samknows suggests I should get 5-6mb. I am 1.4 miles from the exchange according to google maps.

      Any suggestions?

Re: New to sky - very slow (1.25mb d/l)

Is that in the master socket or the test socket? If it's the test socket then theres something wrong there as the NM shouldnt go down in the test socket. Your correct in that with your line attenuation (distance) you should be getting 5-6mb, your noise margin isnt going to allow that at present though.

I've taken the face plate off and am posting using the test socket at the minute, as per the instructions on this site.

I've just reconnected. Here are the latest details through the test socket:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1535 kbps 605 kbps
Line Attenuation 49.0 db 28.0 db
Noise Margin 8.2 db 16.5 db

By those stats your only looking at maybe a 500kbps increase on what you have now. I'd leave it in the test socket for now but additionally confirm that every extension you have is dead when your router is connected to the test socket

Even Sky's own estimate in their MySky bit for my account says I should achieve 3.5mb.

Re: New to sky - very slow (1.25mb d/l)

Sky's estimate is correct (maybe even a bit low) but there is a problem somewhere. If those stats are from the test socket with just a filter and router connected then you will need to try something else.

Would you have another touter from an old provider or similar? If so, you could conect that up and check the stats and sync speed on that.

If not call Sky as they have to try and get your sync speed within 0.5mb of their original estimate.

Do they, that's news to me, it is an estimate and depends on things outside of Skys control, unless the speed s below an acceptable broadband speed (512kbps) I think it is then they are supplying the service as contracted.

Re: New to sky - very slow (1.25mb d/l)

The Ofcom regulations require all ISPs to give an estimate of the expected speed and what the supply must be within a certain range of the given figure. This is why Sky and some other ISPs underestimate the speed, it gives them a bit of leeway.
