      Connection issues

      Hello all,

Long time lingerer of the shadows first time poster so be gentle

Got conneced to Sky unlimited at the beginning of the week, synced at 4068 (i think) the following day it went up to 15.3 with the following stats.

      Attenuation 27
      SNR 7

Just checked sky home page and it shows that DLM has finished (i thought it took 10 days?) i've attached a filtered faceplate and noticed that the line noise then shot up to 11db!!??! I decided to run router stats over night and the signal bounced around a hell of a lot from 4 upto 12.

      Any ideas coz i'm stumped.

Line Attenuation 27 db 15 db
Noise Margin 7 db 10 db

Higher NM is better, the higher your sync speeds, the lower the NM will be. Although im not quite sure what you are asking/wanting

That is fine, 7db is the default Sky set their lines to so you're getting what's expected on your connection...

      Thanks for the replies.

I'm happy with the connection, i'm not sure though if i need to be concerned that the noise margin keeps bouncing between 4 and 12db thats all lol.

      Re: Connection issues

If you can find out what is causing the drop in noise margin, you may get another 1 or 2 Mb. Unfortunately finding the exact cause is not easy. If you can match the drop to some event that would help. Look for things like street lights, micro waves, TV, central heating etc., switching on at the time as the drop.

      Re: Connection issues

      Thanks Isitme.

I'll check, my setup is the line enters the living room where my 42" LCD, PS3, Xbox360 and Wii are so the router actually sits on the TV stand behind the TV (could this be the interferance?).

Other thing that maybe worth pointing out is that i did change the socket recently. When i moved in the master point was just a standard faceplace (not an NTE) so i suppose there is a chance i b*llsed it up lol.

I must admit i'm yet to try the master socket which i learnt from this forum but i'm away at a LAN this weekend so it will have to wait till Monday i suppose.

      Re: Connection issues

Could be the TV but only if the noise margin drops when you switch the tv on could you conclusively say that was causing it. I wouldnt worry hugely about it dropping to 4, the netgear router can hold a stable connection down to very low SnR values - but as isitme said if you can prevent it you might get a bit more speed.
