On the phone to sky now they say I should be getting an estimated 3.5mb/s! They're reconfiguring the line now and seeing if my speeds increase..

Ok reconfiguring the line helped dramatically. The guy said I was coming up at 3mb I did a speed test at about 2.6 (i'll take that!)

However when not plugged in directly to the engineer socket my speed is only 1.6mb

He said that my main socket thing may be faulty and obviously isn't working as it should; what are my options regarding this and what are the possible problems associated?

trying to think of a way to keep the router plugged in to the engineer socket permanently to get the 2.6mb speeds but because of the positioning my wireless connection is awful in my bedroom (where I usually use the laptop)

Plugged into main socket (with casing)

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1856 kbps 256 kbps
Line Attenuation 58.0 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 7.5 db 16.0 db

Plugged into main socket without casing (engineer socket thing)

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3072 kbps 256 kbps
Line Attenuation 58.0 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 10.9 db 16.0 db

      you need to get a new faceplate, best to get a filtered one, im no expert on these faceplates, but one that is often recommended by people on this forum is;

      XTE-2005 ADSL nation filtered faceplate

That should fix your problems, it also means you will no longer have to use a microfilter. It should also allow you to use extensions in your house (if wired properly) someone else will have to help you with any furthur queries on this.

If the speed is better in your test socket, then it is internal wiring.

You could try the old removing the ring wire trick if you are confident to do so. If not then don't attempt to.

Keep the router in the test socket for the time being and download Inssider from the link below, use it to discover the channels in use in your area. Set your router channel to one as far from those in use as possible. If you wireless then performs OK, buy a filtered faceplate as suggested and plug the router into it.

Your best solution would be to fit a filtered faceplate and buy a couple of Homeplugs to connect to your room. These are available with wireless access points, which are useful when using a laptop.

Incidentally if that noise margin in the test socket stays fairly constant then you should be able to get another mb out of it if sky raise the cap up.
