      Download speed

      Hi guys,

      Could anyone tell me how accurate broadband speed tests are?

      If I run a check using speedtest.net or any other tool it gives me a download speed of 128kbps, almost 3 times slower than the upload stat.

      If I log onto the router however I see a connection download speed of 1664! Which one is telling me lies?

      I'm having a lot of connection issues at the moment, and this may be another symptom.

      The router sync speed is correct, there is numerous things which could cause it, you been on sky connect is one of them, especially if they have throttled your internet.

      My exchange doesn't have the Sky equipment in it so I had to take Connect.

      How would I know if they are throttling my internet? I know they mentioned potential restrictions for heavy users but I wouldn't consider myself to be a bandwith hog.

      So if the router syncspeed is correct, could it be the PC that is causing the low check results?

      Yes, are you using wireless? Are you using extensions? If so, use a wired connection, test again, if using extensions, plug into the master socket and try again.

      I'm on the master socket already so I will try using an ethernet cable instead of wireless.

      The reason I'm on the master socket already is that my adsl keeps dropping; Sky Broadband say it could be the line, Sky Talk say it could be the router and if so they will charge me if they send an engineer out! All good fun at the moment!

      Really? They didn't charge when they sent a engineer out to me a couple of weeks ago (well i hope not, they didn't say they would charge)

      If theres a problem with the router, they should send a free one out if its under warranty (less than 1 year old)

      So yes try a Ethernet cable and post your Stats again while using the Ethernet.

      I'm at work at the moment so I'll do that later tonight.

      The router is out of warranty, but they said that if I bought a new one and it didn't correct the problem I could return it for a refund. At that point I could get the engineer out I guess as it would have to be a line issue. To be honest I'm getting crackling noise on the phone also so I think it is probably the line.

      That sounds like the microfilter to me, You need to replace the micro-filter, they usually supply two microfilters with the router, try ringing up and tell them you think the micro-filter is whats causing your problems, they should send you one or two out.

      I've already tried 3 different filters, and two different modem cables, so perhaps the router is causing the crackling sound because it is faulty? Or maybe the line is faulty and is causing the crackling sound and the ADSL dropout.
