      Re: Download speed

I have the full package, HD and Multi-room, Sky Connect, Line Rental and Unlimited phone (no ESPN/MUTV).

They have now ordered an engineer, they said they would let me know in the next 2 days when they will be coming. They also told me it would be 99 call out and 64 ph if it was proved to be my equipment (at which point I told them if they didn't charge me then I wouldn't bill them for the 6 hours I have spent on the phone so far )

I have noticed though that the broadband outage is worse during the day - we can't connect at all in the mornings, can connect intermittently in the afternoons and have the best connection in the evenings. However the phone noise is constant, regardless of which phone we use.

Thanks for your input so far

      Re: Download speed

Really? they should never charge you, like i said in my last post, ive had two engineer visits, both said there was absolutely nothing wrong with my line and there no mention of any charge.

if you have noise on your line, it points to a line fault, the engineer will check the exchange, then come to your house and test the line from there, he will check sync speeds, errors and stability, he will also do a line test. If you tell him you've got noise on the line when you rang the BT quiet test on two seperate phones. He should also check the junction.

      Re: Download speed

With most intermittent faults I doubt they can justify the charge, the charge is after all only there for if you have caused the fault yourself with your own wiring

      Re: Download speed

Thanks for everything - things are moving at last!

On Thursday they said they would get me an engineer call out within 48hours. I heard nothing until yesterday when I got a text message saying it had been fixed - it hadn't (apparently openreach had done a manual diagnostic and not found anything). I called them up and got a very helpful person (at last), and we did a final test with a brand new corded phone in the test socket - still loads of crackling on the line. Interestingly though, when broadband is down we can sometimes "jump start" it by lifting the phone from the receiver.

Anyway, an engineer is coming tomorrow, and I'm fairly confident it isn't chargeable. I will however be asking for a refund on this month's broadband and phone rental.

I was wondering though, there is a lot of building work going on in my area - could this have an effect?

      Cheers

      Re: Download speed

Quite possibly, if the builders have snagged a BT cable or put another cable in too close to BT's which is causing intereference.

      Re: Download speed

Ok, although nothing is being picked up in the line tests. If it is that then I can't see that they could charge me for the call-out though.

      Cheers

      Re: Download speed

You have a high resistance fault, this is usually due to a poor connection at teither the pole or in the green cabinet, when the phone is used the extra current bridges the gap and pushes through the broadband, once the phone call is hung up, the joint starts to fail again and your broadband starts to drop.

      Re: Download speed

      Hi,

Could that cause the constant line noise also?

      Cheers

      Re: Download speed

Yes, certainly a crackle sound and maybe a hissing if the joint is only just making contact and allowing interference through it.

      Result!

Engineer has been, checked inside the house and all was fine, so went up the pole and found...the line had been corroded by bird droppings!

All seems to be working now, but thanks for everyone's input
