Having the cap lifted is not going to cure your drop outs. There is a fault, either with the router or with your wiring. Fitting and using a filtered faceplate will isolate your internal wiring, which is probably the source of the problem.
is it possible to leave it in the test socket until i get a filtered faceplate or will that cause problems.

Leave it in the test socket, but contrary to what you have been told a filtered faceplate will only let you maintain the speeds in the test socket and there will be very little improvement over the test socket speeds.

The only downside of leaving it in the test socket is that its exposed, dust can get in etc and its not as secure(meaning the wire can be unplugged much easier) Other than that leave it in the test socket, ive had mine in the test socket for at least a month now, as the NM is slightly better.

As others have said, leave it in the Test socket till you get a filtered faceplate. If the drop outs stop you will know that it was your internal wiring to blame. If it continues to drop, then it is your router or the external line. Remember though, when you fit a filtered faceplate you must use it to plug in the router. You will not get any ADSL signal on any of your other sockets.
