      No Usenet access.

Hi just got connected to sky on friday and cant get any downloads from giganews since making the switch.

Everything else seems to work ok except for my usenet downloads.

Have tried changing ports on my client (altbinz) but to no avail.

Really stumped with this one its almost like a firewall but it does connect and authenticate sometimes just no speed at all. Occasionally it looks like it has started to download a file but only about 0.5k!!

Hoping I have overlooked something really simple but cant think what.

Oh I have also tried another client and if I go to the giganews home page and try the speed/trace tool it seems to work as it should.

      Any help/suggestions very much appreciated.

      Re: No Usenet access.

If your profile is correct and you are on Sky Connect then you are screwed

Sky Connect is one of the very worst BB packages in the country and is way over capacity, everything is traffic shaped and come peak hours (5pm - midnight) it gets even worst.

The only soloution is to leave for a better managed ISP or an LLU operator, do not be fobbed of if Sky tell you to check anything, there is nothing you can do, if you are within your cooling off period, get your MAC code and use it!!!

      Re: No Usenet access.

Yeah profile is correct but I don't believe this to be traffic shaping as I've tried it in the early hours of the morning too.

At least if it was shaping I'd be getting something but don't seem to be getting anything.

If I cant get this sorted in a couple of days I will be canceling though.

      Re: No Usenet access.

It's not just traffic shaping, thats the point, it is lack of capacity, Sky have crammed more and more customers onto thier system without increasing the capacity so now come 5pm, BT apply Sky allocation and the whole thing grinds to a halt, nothing is useable except the most basic browsing.

Think what you like but if you have a read of some of the many threads on this site re Sky Connect you would know what the problem is. My advice is to ask for your MAC now, you don't have to use it if you find a magic button to fix it but at least you will have it if you need it. (and you will)

      Re: No Usenet access.

I will probably ask for it soon. Just to be clear though I can get decent download speeds using other sites its just newsgroups that seem to be the problem.

Hi as Smithy99 says it is the traffic management 5pm till Midnight but also School holidays will effect day time. This time last year it was really bad and if you think that Sky have not bought any bandwidth but are still selling the connect package.

      Re: No Usenet access.

Hi,thanks for the replies. Still not convinced that this is a shaping problem. Speed tests and downloads from other sources seem to work ok. Just no throughput on usenet.

Will keep looking for a solution but may well cancel.

Can anyone confirm how long the cooling off period is?

      Cheers

      Ian

Hi have a look at What is this rubbish? you can see what the traffic management throttling can do to the connect package. Cooling off period is 8 days.

But outside the throttling hours there shouldn't be an issue...OP has tried it early hours so I agree with him that it could be something else...

      Re: No Usenet access.

Even outside the peak hours traffic management is still on and could be reducing anything that is bandwidth hungery like Usenet.

Are you able to switch ports, with newsleecher you could try port 80, this may just bypass it or even try using SSL, that has worked for some on other ISP's in the past.
