      Help with poor download speed.

Hi, I hope someone could offer some advice on what I consider to be a poor download speed on Sky Unlimited. I'm an ex Virgin Media Cable customer so I know I have been spoilt with speeds in excess of 16Mb but unfortuanately Virgin will not or cannot supply cable to my current property. Annoying really since there are many properties arround me who do get Virgin.

That aside, I'm currently getting 2Mb download speed (1.7Mb in practice) but I'm sure I should be getting better speeds than that. Various sources suggest that I could expect up to 6Mb based upon my distance from the exchange and my line attenuation. Could anyone please have a look at these details to see if there is a problem at Skys end or if I just have to put up with poor speed.

I've already plugged the router (Sky supplied Netgear) in to the Master test socket but It has made no difference to the actual download speed.

      Exchange details (from samknows.com)
Distance - 0.7Km as the crow flys
      Serves - 20,000 (approx)

      Router Stats
      ASDL
      Speed Downstream 2042kbps
      Speed Upstream 604 kbps
      Line Attenuation Down 48 db
      Line Attenuation Up 25 db
      Noise Margin Down 8 db
      Noise Margin Up 15 db

      Thanks

How many sockets have you got on the telephone line and do you have a test socket
How to test your ADSL in the Master Socket
If you have a test socket run a test from there and make sure any extension sockets are dead with no dial tone when the test socket is exposed. if you have no test socket make sure nothing but the filter and router are connected to the telephone line for the test, some people mistake the Sky tv splitter for a filter and do not realise they need to plug it into the filter and not the filter into it.

I have three sockets (only one used normally) and have tested the test socket but this makes no difference to the speed.

You speed it probably capped. Please do as suggested and plug into your TEST socket and post the stats.

Re: Help with poor download speed.

Here are my stats for the test socket

      Speed Downstream 2042kbps
      Speed Upstream 604 kbps
      Line Attenuation Down 48 db
      Line Attenuation Up 30 db
      Noise Margin Down 16 db
      Noise Margin Up 16 db

I notice that my noise margin has doubled for Downstream but the Downstreem speed is the same. Does that suggest a capped speed?

Re: Help with poor download speed.

On the basis that my speed was being capped I phoned sky to get my speed checked.

After quite a long conversation and testing of my line they have managed to get me the following stats

      Speed Downstream 3456kbps
      Speed Upstream 416 kbps
      Line Attenuation Down 47 db
      Line Attenuation Up 30 db
      Noise Margin Down 7 db
      Noise Margin Up 16 db

This gives me a download of about 3Mb after overheads which I'm reasonably happy about, although more speed would be nice of course . However this seems to be at the expense of upload speed. I can probably cope with an upload speed like this but is this to be expected?

      Thanks

Re: Help with poor download speed.

It looks like they have put you on G,DMT and left the upload speed as standard. Sky support very often do this for some reason. Give Sky a ring and ask them to improve your upload speed as it is a bit low.

Did Sky do the adjustments when the router was in the TEST socket? You have only gained 1mb but dropped 8db in the noise margin which doesn't seem right.

I would have expected 5mb with that noise margin.

They asked me to move the router to the master socket, not the test socket. They did say that they tried 4Mb and 5Mb but the line wasn't stable.

Re: Help with poor download speed.

Your best bet is to buy, fit and use a filtered faceplate. This isolates your extensions and improves the broadband connection. If the line was not configured from the Test socket, it is still not right, your extensions are causing interference and reducing the possible speed.
