Unfortunately I have to plug the Router into one of the extensions since not all PCs are WIFI enabled. Would a filtered faceplace help with the router plugged into an extension?

No it would not work at all, you have to be plugged into the faceplate.
The alternate is to use longer ethernet cables, which is the cheapest option, or Homeplugs.-
      HomePlug and Powerline - from 16.61 85Mbps 200Mbps 1000Mbps

Note - When downloading always select the Custom install or you will end up with stuff you don't want.

Thanks. I can't see the Mrs allowing me to put more cable in. She's still recovering from me putting in surround sound for the Blueray

I think I'm happy with the nearly 2x speed increase for now and I'll look into getting the other PC wifi at a later stage. Thanks for all your help.

To be honest, I think putting wireless in a PC is a waste of money, Homeplugs are faster, more stable and more secure. This applies especially if you have a slow connection to begin with. Wireless will only make it slower.
