      Wiring an extension with cat5e

      Hi,

I have the main BT master socket downstairs, and my PC upstairs, next to an extension socket, wired to the master socket with 5m of (unidentified) wire.

The Sky router is plugged into this extension socket, and the PC is connected to the router by cable (no wireless adapter in the PC). If, as I suspect, I get better broadband speeds by connecting the router to the master socket down stairs, I am exploring two possibilities

      1) Rewiring the connection between the extension socket upstairs with cat5e cable and plugging in the router upstairs

      2) Buying a wireless adapter for the PC and leaving the sky box down stairs.

I'd rather do 1 if possible. Two questions:

      a) is (1) going to give me roughly the same speeds as connecting to the master socket.

      b) If I do (1), will I benefit from an adsl faceplate upstairs where the extension socket is, or downstairs where the master socket is, or both?

      Thanks for any advice!

      Hi

I have my router upstairs plugged into master socket and then ran a length of cat5 cable downstairs to my pc - works perfectly
