      Spikes and slow internet

Hi , I was on a 20mb line with downloads speeds of around 2.2mb/s and low-average ping in games. The downstream has now gone to about 2mb and the downloads are 140kb/s at max, the lagometer in game fully spikes repeatedly with a +30 onto the usual ping i get. And web pages and online videos such as youtube get about 2 seconds of play before buffering again. This has only happened in last few days.

I have rebooted the router several times leaving a 'cool down' period.
I've checked all cables and microfilters.

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 19769 kbps 1150 kbps
Line Attenuation 11.5 db 5.1 db
Noise Margin 7.0 db 8.7 db

We need the router stats that show the noise margin, you need to click on the show statistics button at the bottom of the router page.

Post your stats, from your normal position and from the Test socket, using only the ADSL cable and filter supplied by Sky.

Looks way aobove normal, they are nice stats, but get the TEST socket ones just to compare.

I would guess the problem is that you are using wireless, try changing the router channel, start at 13 and work down, I would however advise you use a wire or homeplugs if that is too difficult.

      Re: Spikes and slow internet

You may have one of those awkward thruput issues which is usually down to a faulty card in the exchange.

The difficulty is getting Sky to understand it and then send the BT guys out to fix it. Do you have a spare router you could try or know anyone else with Sky that can lend you theirs?

      Re: Spikes and slow internet

I think Smithy is probably right in that it is an exchange problem, but just to check, Start in Safe Mode with Networking and go here and post the results.

Sky User - Broadband Speed Tester

Then open a Command Prompt and type ping jolt.co.uk and post the result.
