      Sudden flashing amber internet light...

So Thursday night the broadband was working fine, perfectly in fact with a crystal clear phone line, Friday morning arrives and suddenly the broadband is down, the router is displaying a flashing amber 'internet' light which I believe means that it's trying to connect, but obviously failing. The phone line is also crackly so I decided to change the filters which didn't improve a thing and connected the router to the test socket to no avail. However, we are able to get normal broadband connection if someone is using the phone which makes me think that something has occurred during the night in terms of the line, i.e. a fault with a wire etc. Is ANYONE able to shed any light as Sky are being as useful as a chocolate teapot...

Hi can you connect the router into the master socket with a different micro filter, and disconnect the phone line this will determine if the phone is causing the issue.

If you are getting no luck from the test socket then you have a line fault. You need to ring up the people you pay your line rental too (hopefully BT) if it is, report it as a voice fault, say nothing about BB it will confuse things for now.

What you are describing is a high resistance fault, this is basically a poor connection somewhere (usually at the pole or green cabinet) when the line is under load from a voice call the connection cleans up a bit but when the voice call ends the BB connection drops away.

They can be a bugger to track down but once the voice side is sorted that will also cure the BB side of it.

If you pay your line rental to Sky, you will have to keep on at them until they get BT out to look at it.

Hi, I connected it to the master socket AND the test socket on it's own and still the light is flashing, I have a feeling it's what Smithy says and the problem is actually down to something external. If this was the case would people in my neighbourhood be experiencing the same problems or does every house have a separate connection i.e. not related in any way?

Hi you could ask your next door neighbour you never know. Do you have another router you could set up. To see if it is the router failing that do a smithy says. If your rental is with Sky report it as a voice fault, say nothing about BB it will confuse things for now.

You are all connected to the same exchange but you have your own cable that comes from there to your house.

Chances are that BT have been doing some work in one of the green cabinets and desturbed your wiring without realising, they look like a cat has been playing with a ball of wool inside with wires running all over the place.

If not there then at the top of the telephone pole, sometimes water etc can get in and corrode the joints.

As advised, ring BT and report a voice fault, let them come and sort that out, if the engineer calls to the house you can then explain the problem with your broadband.

A cup of tea/coffee and a couple of chocolate hobknobs always helps.

Ah finally some news! After 4 calls to Sky, it seems the problem could've been resolved in the first call where a fault on the line was found. 'An engineer will be out within 48 hours' :'D. Thanks everyone.
