Router crashes when downloading, playing games.

      Hi folks,

I've had this problem for a while, my current router is a Sagem. Basically, I'll be using the web, and suddenly webpages will stop loading and my internet connection icon will get a yellow exclamation sign on it.

I am also unable to connect to the router interface when this happens at 192.168.0.1

Looking at the router at this point, you see that the OK green tick light has gone off and a few seconds later, the internet light will turn orange and start flickering between orange and red.

As far as I can tell, the only resolution to the issue is to reboot the router.

      Things I have tried:

      * Changing from using wireless internet to ethernet. No difference
      * Disabled UPNP as mentioned in various places. No difference.
      * Reporting a faulty router to Sky and recieving a brand new replacement. Still happens with the new router.
      * Leaving the router flashing orange for 5+ hours. It does not recover on its own.
      * Observing the "noise margin" mentioned in how to guides on fixing router issues. I have had crashes over and over and over - it's not because the noise level has changed.

The reason I am posting this here now, despite having wrestled with it for 7 or 8 months now with intermittent crashes is because I have now found a method to 100% guaranteed crash the router every time I do it: log into the computer game "Starcraft 2".

Every time I do it, my router crashes. Every single time, within a second of logging in. It is infuriating.

Is there anything anyone can suggest? Since I can now make it crash on demand, is there any sort of debugging that I can do to help?

I ran wireshark (a network traffic monitor) on the connection and I can see that the communication between the game and the game servers involves a large number of retransmits, even before the router loses connection. Perhaps my system is flooding the router and it's breaking down due to too much data being sent?

The only issue with this theory is that it seems to be an uncommon issue... but I'd assume if it was just sending/receiving lots of packets it would happen to people all the time.

So, can anyone shed any light on this for me? It's driving me insane.

      Code:
Connection Speed 11263 kbps 870 kbps
Line Attenuation 27.0 db 12.3 db
Noise Margin 8.2 db 8.5 db
As far as I know, this is a reasonably good connection.

Hi first of all with you attenuation of 27db you should be able to get 16mbs or maybe a bit more if you can do How to test your ADSL in the Master Socket to see what speed you are getting from the test socket. About the crashing there is a reset button on the back of the router have you tried that. I am sure someone with more knowledge or ideas will come to assist

Yes, like I said, using the reset button is the only way to get the router working again.

I don't think I have access to the master socket here, since I'm in a block of flats with only one phone line socket.

This isn't an issue with speed, however. I'm perfectly happy with the speed, it's the router crashing that is a problem for me.

One quick bit of input before I head out - this may sound silly, but did you swap over for the new power supply unit when sky sent the replacement router? When you mention the internet light flicking red, it's usually a PSU issue.

You mean the plug? Humz, I'm not sure but now I come to think of it, I probably didn't bother.

Thanks for the suggestion, I shall go do this now and see if I get any further crashes!

*edit* haha, would you look at that... no crash! You genius! I can't believe I didn't think to replace the power supply when I received a new router, it just didn't occur to me that it could be the fault.

Thank you so much - I hope this isn't just random luck that it hasn't crashed. First time I've been able to successfully log into the game without a crash. WOO!

Is it possible to do this without access to the master socket? As I said, I don't think I can get to it in my flat.

Hi what we need is someone like Isitme or one of the SkyUser members who are more capable than me to step in and show you how to get your connection speed higher.

      The answer is yes.
