      50kbs downstream lol

      Hi
Im trying to get away from virgin( too expensive).
I have free sky base, which is very poor, not sky's fault though.

I've logged into the sagem router and the downstream is 504, upstream 414.
Which is laughable, i've added the exchange details, so i take it i am stuck with virgin?

These speeds are a best guess as to what you may actually achieve, and depend on each individual line. If you already have ADSL, and your current speed is actually higher than the one above, you can already see the difference from the historical data.

      Re: 50kbs downstream lol

This is the first time i've used the sky base, since it was installed 2 months ago. Im wondering if they have capped it low, as it was not being used.

      Re: 50kbs downstream lol

I've had a look and there is no master socket for the house.
The wiring is old, and there is an old rounded off rectangular plastic box, which is full of connectors and extension wiring connecting to the main wiring but no socket.

      Re: 50kbs downstream lol

Follow the main BT wire coming into the house and see where it stops first, if it is a socket, remove the front and see if there is a capacitor on it (looks a bit like a aaa bettery) if it is a junction box, how many wires come from it and where do they go?

A photo of them will help, just paste it onto the forum.

      Re: 50kbs downstream lol

I've attached a photo, the wiring is terrible.
The house used to be a rest home, so there are extension sockets everywhere, maybe 20 for this phone line in total.
The BT engineers hate coming here, maybe they could install a master socket if i complain.

      Re: 50kbs downstream lol

I think that is your main problem. There are numerous wires coming from the junction box and I have no doubt these are going to sockets with other sockets wired into them. To get a decent broadband signal through that lot will be nigh on impossible. It really need fully rewired. These old junction boxes should have been replaced foc by BT with an NTE5 years ago. They may fit an NTE5 for you, but they may want to charge. Fitting an NTE5 with a filtered faceplate with your ADSL line wired to the AB terminals of the faceplate would be the best way.
