Re: Very slow browsing/gaming and constant disconnects

I am wondering whether Sky have gone mental on the throttling in the last few days. I've never had problems before but this evening and yesterday have been obscene. Just loading this page to reply took ages.

Does anyone know whether having my brother and sister on a lot at the moment (just finished school) might mean we're using too much and they've suddenly started throttling? Unplugging the router for a while seemed to work last night but I really need some sort of solution as this speed is worse than in the dial-up days (I got 48kbps on a test)

      Just wondering whether it's a nationwide clamp-down?

Re: Very slow browsing/gaming and constant disconnects

Boardy, your noise margin is very low and will be creating errors, unplug the router and then get the stats again, if you can, get them from the TEST socket, also if using wireless, try a wire. How to test your ADSL in the Master Socket

James, you are on Sky Connect which is way over capacity, nothing you do will sort this other than leaving Sky and choosing a better managed network, for gaming you cannot beat the Plusnet gamers package.

Re: Very slow browsing/gaming and constant disconnects

As smithy says your noise margin is very low and is likely causing problems with tons of errors causing a poor ping. Rebooting the router and reducing the sync speed as it syncs back up to 7db should resolve it, I always recommend on lines which fluctuate highly during the evening that you only reboot during the evening as this will sync it up lower and reduce the possibility of errors otherwise.

Unhappy Re: Very slow browsing/gaming and constant disconnects

I've noticed this too, unsure if it's the same issue we're having, as not technical enough to understand...

      Here's my stats...

      Connection Speed
      3968 kbps
      554 kbps
      Line Attenuation
      59.0 db
      38.5 db
      Noise Margin
      6.8 db
      10.5 db

I find in general I can only have one group of HTTP requests (a chrome tab) being fulfilled at any one time. If anyone else in the house tries to use the Internet we all start complaining that nothing is loading (often the browser will simply report it hasn't been able to reach the website, but a refresh fixes it).

I did run some tracerts to see if there was a problem at that level...

      Hi,

This shows that you have an internal wiring issue, While in the test socket dial 17070 then number 2 and listen for an noise on the line, If there is noise its BT's problem so get them to sort it, If there is no noise then plug your wiring back in and do the same if there is noise its your problem.

In my current setup i have a filtered faceplate from here adslnation.com - broadband products i also connect to the master which i highly recommend you to do.

      Regards
      Darryl

Re: Very slow browsing/gaming and constant disconnects

Sorry for late reply been away but heard the connection was fine up until 2 days ago heres the stats from master socket(it always was plugged into the master skt)

Connection Speed 5145 kbps 939 kbps
Line Attenuation 50.0 db 31.1 db
Noise Margin 7.1 db 7.7 db

      heres test socket

Connection Speed 6251 kbps 983 kbps
Line Attenuation 50.5 db 30.9 db
Noise Margin 7.2 db 7.8 db

@ Darryl The only noise i get when i try the test socket is 5 beeps then nothing.

looking at the speed increase on the test socket i'd guess the problem is on my side which is annoying as i've had this setup for over 2years never any problems before. Will changing the faceplate fix this problem or could it be a lot of different things?

Re: Very slow browsing/gaming and constant disconnects

A filtered faceplate will remove the interference caused by any other internal wiring and that way you can be sure if the fault continues then it won't be on your side.

Re: Very slow browsing/gaming and constant disconnects

If the ring wire is connected to terminal 3 on the faceplate, removing this may improve your speed from the faceplate. It is not required, especially when using filters on the other devices connected to the phone.
Ultimately, the best solution is fitting and using a filtered faceplate. Apart from anything else, you can then dispense with the filters on other sockets.
