Does Sky Player thrash your usage?

      I'm on the 10GB service, and am a fairly low-level user -- average usage is 3 to 4 GB/month.

I just received a usage e-mail notifying me that I'd used 8GB already this month -- I'm only halfway through my month -- and the only out-of-the-ordinary use I can think of is that I've started using Sky Player to watch cricket now and then.

This hasn't been constant, 8-hour days -- more an hour here and there, with an hour and a half today. My entirely uncertain guess is a total of 5 or 6 hours during this billing period.

So: what's the usage demand of Sky Player?

Is it likely to be that, or should I be looking for viruses and trojans? (I'll run scans for those anyway, of course.)

      Cheers,
      Harvey

An hour of content can easily be 500mb (0.5gb), if you used 6 hours then thats 3gb so if you normally use 4gb then that's easily up to 7gb.

Many thanks. That's exactly the sort of ballpark figure I was after -- I'll certainly not be using the thing for the next fortnight!

I have an Internet Radio and use it to listen to Classic FM (my location delivers very poor FM and absolutely no DAB). Classic FM's stream is at 128 kb/sec and uses 55 MB/hour of bandwidth. So it's very easy to use 5 GB/month listening to the radio.

That's an excellent point that I'd not thought of -- I listen for a fair number of hours to Radio Swiss Classic, which also streams at 128 kb/sec. (Mind you, I'd been doing that for some time before this recent usage spike -- it's what raised my previous figures from 2.5-3GB up to 3-4GB/month.)

As an aside, I'm quite fond of the Swiss classical station for background music while I'm working; they play very pleasant and sometimes unexpected stuff. It's not challenging, but not simply warhorses -- more of the Mozart-to-Schumann stuff than other periods. Also no adverts, and the discussion -- in German, French, or Italian -- is basically limited to IDs of the music and performers. If you want to check it out, the website is at Radio Swiss Classic - Music Programme.

      Cheers,
      Harvey

Another quick comparison - last season I watched a football match (live) on high quality and it did over 2GB (can't remember of that was a half or full match) but you get the idea...
