      Speed Decrease

Over the last few weeks my broadband speed has dropped from roughly 16500 kbps to the below:

      Download
      Connection Speed 13307 kbps
      Line Attenuation 35 db
      Noise Margin 10 db

      Upload
      Connection Speed 412 kbps
      Line Attenuation 20 db
      Noise Margin 15 db

The speeds are the same from the test socket.

I've also emailed sky today about the issue but any input from you guys would be appreciated.

When you say the same from the master do you mean the test socket? If you don't try the test socket then any extension wiring is still connected.

      Re: Speed Decrease

The speeds may be the same from the test socket as they are obviously capped but it'd be helpful if you posted the full stats from the test socket. Attenuation and noise margin are more important figures to compare going from the normal socket to the test.

      Re: Speed Decrease

That shows in effect your losing 500kbps inbetween the test socket and the normal one, either way phone up sky with the router in the test socket and say you've been capped have noise in reserve and want your speed pushed back up. They should be able to push it up by at least 2mb.

      Re: Speed Decrease

Sorry to say but with a line attenuation figure of 35db, it is highly unlikely that you would sync at 16,500kbps.

Line attenuation of 35db puts you approx 2.5k from the exchange.

      Downstream
      Attenuation 35dB Approx line length 2.5 k
      adsl2+ (LLU) 11712 kbps Throughput 10365kbps

Here are my stats from a 34db line
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 11544 kbps 765 kbps
Line Attenuation 34.0 db 15.9 db
Noise Margin 7.3 db 8.5 db

Note the SNR of 7.3db if I re synce I can sync a little higher 12.500 but that would shove the SNR down below 6db. Target is 6.9db

To get as you claim 16500kbps your line attenuation would have to be 28db.

      Re: Speed Decrease

It's possible for longer lines to run better than shorter lines, for example I have 36db attenuation and get a stable 14mb
Many factors can be in effect newer cable in lines/better quality cable not routed near noisy external devices.

Finally got a reply this morning and my new stats are as follows:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 15339 kbps 1014 kbps
Line Attenuation 36 db 20 db
Noise Margin 7 db 7 db

Just on this point I have checked my master socket and it has no wires going into the faceplate. There are no other telephone sockets in the house but there is a junction box with no socket next to the front door. Would it be worth my while getting a filtered faceplate for my master socket with this situation?

      Re: Speed Decrease

No, the faceplate will have no effect unless the current one is faulty.

You could try a squirt of WD40 and wiggling it in and out a few times to clean up the connection.
