Thumbs down Intermittent connection and varying speeds.

Hiya, hopefully somone will take the time to read my post as Ive got a fair bit to explain, and then hopefully you guys might be able to offer some help.

Ive been with sky broadband for a few years now. The router has always been connected to an extension phone line with few problems, however on the last couple of weeks things have been dreadful.

The broadband is very intermittent - the internet light on the router randomly turns off and internet connection is lost and also speeds were incredibly I was getting abou 300kbps download speeds.

I rang sky and the first customer service assisant told me the problem was likely to be my adsl microfilter and that i should change that. I did this however the problem was unresolved.

I rang again and this time they got me to connect the router to my test socket in the hallway of my house. The router showed a much better speed of about 4000 kbps. This service assistant deduced that the problem was with the extension of the phone line and she suggested i move the router to the main phone socket - which i have done.

Unfortuntely this hasn't solved the problem as connection is still frequently lost and speeds vary dramatically. I can usually get from 3000 kbps downstream speed down to the 300 kbps i mentioned earlier.

Can anyone give me any advice?

      Thanks

Leave it in the test socket for a while and see if the problems persist. Can you also post up your router stats?

Re: Intermittent connection and varying speeds.

You say you got 4mb in your test and 3mb when presumably you replaced the faceplate to your master socket...that's a massive 1 mb loss and unusual.

Go back in your Test socket - is the issue then resolved? If it is, look to replacing the bottom half on the Master as there shouldn't be that massive difference in having the plate on as opposed to being the Test.

Also - when you went in Test - did you remove all telephony? You wouldn've been asked to do that - could it be that plugging the telephony back in has caused it to slow/fluctuate? It is possible to tell all of this by removing the lot and plugging each device back in and then viewing details in the rsp - how does it alter when each device is plugged in?

Err, no it is NOT unusual! The fact that you get this drop suggests you have poor/noisy extension wiring, it would be best to fit a filtered faceplate. To deduce if that is the cause of the disconnects you would need to run with the router connected to the test socket for a while, in any case if you plan to keep your extensions then you will need the faceplate anyway to keep the best speed! Constant disconnects can also be a symptom of REIN in which case a BT 80B RF3 has been proved to help.

BTW, if this fault has only just happened it could be water ingress/wind damage (if on overhead lines) considering the weather we have just had!

No, its been like this for a while.

I actually have a filtered faceplate, however I dont know how to fit it. Ive looked at guides and they talk about unconnecting/reconnecting wires etc.... not sure I want to be fiddling around like that in case i mess it up.

Re: Intermittent connection and varying speeds.

here are some updated router stats:

microfilter connected to test socket, with phone disconnected:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3435 kbps 550 kbps
Line Attenuation 50.5 db 33.5 db
Noise Margin 7.5 db 10.5 db

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3435 kbps 550 kbps
Line Attenuation 50.5 db 33.5 db
Noise Margin 7.5 db 10.5 db

I guess this would show that it isn't the phone that is causing the connection issues, however that's just me guessing.

Re: Intermittent connection and varying speeds.

As suggested, it's down to poor internal wiring.

How many telephone sockets do you use in the house?
Does every telephone socket in use have a microfilter connected directly into the socket?
Do you have sky tv plugged in somewhere?

Re: Intermittent connection and varying speeds.

The phone connected will not be the issue, it's the extension wiring. Fitting the faceplate is easy, note down what wires are connected to 2,3 & 5 on the existing front plate and replicate on the new ADSL faceplate.
