      Better Upload Speed ?

Is there a way I can get a better upload speed? My max seems to be about 35 kB/s on a good day. Stats below.

Sky have advised (from the web) that I have a d/l speed of 6mB and an u/l speed of 0.6mB (from memory, since sky.com is down.

Is there something I can do to improve u/l speed?
Is there something Sky can do?

Any help gratefully received. Thanks for reading.

      Re: Better Upload Speed ?

Plug into the test socket (link below) with just a filter and using no extensions to the router - only the short grey dsl cable sky supplied.

How to test your ADSL in the Master Socket

If the upstream doesn't improve, or the noise margin doesn't go above 9db, then it's just a case that DLM has left the upstream config a mess and sky will need to fix it.

Plugging into the test socket, my stats are:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 6143 kbps 606 kbps
Line Attenuation 38.5 db 21.5 db
Noise Margin 13.0 db 16.5 db

      Apologies for the poor formatting.
So what do I need to do now...?

      Re: Better Upload Speed ?

You have severe noise issues from where you were connecting the router before, your best option is to purchase and fit a filtered faceplate for your master socket and run the router directly from that. Your connection is capped and you can get some more speed in both the download and upload if you give sky a ring and get the cap removed. Your looking at about 1mb in the upload and 9mb in the download.

      Re: Better Upload Speed ?

It's great that it's within my power to fix some of this. Can you advise exactly what I need to do, or point me to a 'how to' web page, as this is beyond my ken? Thanks...

      Re: Better Upload Speed ?

Okay, have googled a filtered faceplate and see that I just fit an additional box to the front of the BT box. Is that it, no wiring or nowt? I can pick one of those up from Maplins tomorrow...

      Re: Better Upload Speed ?

Dont get one from maplins they'll just charge you more for something that is made much more cheaply. Personally I recommend ADSL Nations XTE-2005, I presume you have telephone extensions? In this case all you need to do is take the wires out of your old faceplate on the socket and then use an IDC tool to attach them to the filtered outputs on the back of the new filtered faceplate - full instructions supplied with the faceplate.

      Re: Better Upload Speed ?

I thought I would update this. I bought a Tamar ADSL Faceplate Filter from Amazon for 5.20 and installed last night without issue. Here are my current stats:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 6143 kbps 606 kbps
Line Attenuation 38.5 db 22.3 db
Noise Margin 3.6 db 8.5 db

Thanks very much Simon, your advice was spot-on.

My upload speed has increased to approx 40kB/s and I'm hoping it will go higher still.

I have noticed the broadband connection is dropping, prob about six times today - is that to be expected? What is the cause?
