Connection speed not as advised by the Router

We joined sky a long time ago (with their Sky TV package). A couple of years ago (or more) we joined Sky Mid, which was 5 as we took out the free Sky Talk package. Recently, after upgrading our Sky Talk to Sky line rental, we were told on the phone we would get free BB(! - which wasn't true, but we took it as that, and pursuaded them to give us line rental and max BB free!!!). Now we only pay for TV, but get the full packages. All good. Anyway:

After the upgrade to max, we still get the same speeds - with the exception of the upload speed by about 100kb/s. Here's my speeds: (not sure what happened with the upload speed, usually around 600kb/s)

For some reason, even though I live in Manchester, Speedtest.net seems to think that my closest location to my line is Coventry :S - that only happened after the upgrade.

On my router status page, I see this:
Connection Speed 8190 kbps 796 kbps
Line Attenuation 35.0 db 19.7 db
Noise Margin 7.1 db 16.5 db

Obviously, I'm not getting those speeds, even though I'm connected through a 1GB/s ethernet port to my router.

      Any suggestions?

Re: Connection speed not as advised by the Router

Firstly you can lose around 10-20% from the sync speed in speedtests.
Secondly speedtest.net is notoriously unreliable try the one on this site or speed.io
Thirdly having a 1gb ethernet port makes no difference as it is connected to a 100mb/s port on the router
Finally your sync speed is actually a bit low for your attenuation but there's no noise in reserve for an increase, can you please repost your stats from your master test socket (Link on the left side of the page) as you may have internal wiring issues slowing it down.

Run 50 speed tests - you'll get 50 different results...of course you don't get 'that speed' in a speed test - there are thousands of other ppl running the same test at the same time and that means the Server is handling all the requests!

you got upgraded cos you exceeded your usage allowance : don't think you're going to get 20mb all of a sudden.

At the end of the day....is your bb slow? No, it's not slow. Enjoy...stop fretting
