      2 Dodgy routers?

      Hi,

      New member so be kind!

Had sky for years, no problems after initial teething. Normal standard Sagem Router - no fancy internal wiring just connection to phone and sky boxes from single socket but it is an old style connection i.e. no test socket.

On Sunday router just went off with internet light going orange as opposed to green. Went through a process of resetting, switching on off etc, connecting pc via cable etc but no avail - all the switching on/off seemed to upset the router and I got a whole series of lights flashing on/off but no connection. Phoned Sky tech suppoort told me router was dead and would send me a new one (after i refused to pay for a replacement)

Kept trying and then all worked again connected no problem disconnected cable and worked wireless until around midnight last night.

Then same problem again orange internet light and no connection. Tried the new router this am - but still the same - before I go back to Sky - am I right in thinking most likely issue is a line fault - I'll check internal wiring tonight but I've tried with just the router to the socket and nothing else connected.

      Thanks

Did you replace the power supply unit that came with the replacement router, also?

Unplug all devices from the phone socket(s) in the house, swap for another filter and plug it directly into the master socket with only the short grey dsl cable going to the router. Post up the stats once you've done that:

I didn't change the power supply, just plugged the new router in - will try when home again.

Will post some stats if ever able to connect again

      Re: 2 Dodgy routers?

Tried again this evening, taken all down and started again with the new router - seems to be working fine now - but lets see what happens

      Test results:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2044 kbps 605 kbps
Line Attenuation 64.5 db 37.3 db
Noise Margin 7.2 db 13.3 db

Not sure what these mean but i'll read up - i know the line speed is dire - distance from exchange apparently

      Thanks

You do have a long line and are doing quite well for the attenuation. A change to g.dmt on sky's end would help slightly with stability and a little speed, but probably not a massive difference, really.
