      Excessively Slow Connection, Help/Advice appreciated

Greetings Skyuser forum users, im posting here on behalf of my parents current internet situation.

EDIT:- They are using Sky Connect and they are experiencing excessively slow connection speeds. Ive done a speed check on a number of websites, and have posted the results from the speed.io test in my signature, which collaborates with others i have run. This doesnt seem to tally up with what the router page is displaying:
      "DownStream Connection Speed 256 kbps
      UpStream Connection Speed 448 kbps"
(although the downstream was at 600 earlier in the day, before peak time and before i followed advice on this website, and removed the ring wire - should i reconnect this?)

Have tried connection in the master socket (speed test below was taken in MS) and noticed no speed increase through just browsing or speed checkers. Im 2.7km from the nearest exchange (salisbury).

Any help or advice on this subject would be much appreciated. I'll be happy to provide any more information needed. Thanks in advance. ^_^

It's quite rare to have an upload speed that great and such a crap download speed.

      Very rare i'd say.

Hi is it happening mostly between 5pm and Midnight if so have a look here Sky User - Sky Connect Broadband - Are you being slowed down? and this (Unofficial) FAQ - Sky Connect Users Do you know about the Traffic Management at peak times 5pm till Midnight. A good idea is to use the link How to get your router statistics Just copy and paste to your next post.

Re: Excessively Slow Connection, Help/Advice appreciated

Thanks for the swift help, was out at a birthday so ive only just done what you asked, no theres no difference during peak times, line runs at the same speed 24 hours a day pretty much >.< It being 3am and still running slowly.

Heres the stats from my router page:
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 256 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 63 db 31 db
Noise Margin 8 db 12 db

although I dont know where to locate the Sync Speed, so telling me where i can find that would be awesome, checked the site incase it was around in a post or something aswell as all the pages on the router info, but no joy.

As for the BT speedtester, i used the one found here and it just told me i should be on BT Total Broadband, if this is the wrong one, give me a link to follow and ill do that instead.

Many thanks, hope mondays not too rough on you folks!

If you click this link which Steve gave you will find out how to do a BT speedtest, -
(Unofficial) FAQ - Sky Connect Users

To be honest looking at your stats it will do no good. You are showing a sync speed of 256kbps, which is very very low. Your noise margin shows that you will not get any more, partly due to the very long phone line, but possibly due to internal wiring.

Please plug into the Test socket, using only the cables supplied by Sky and post the stats from there. If you do not have a Test socket, plug the router into the master socket and disconnect everything else that is plugged into the phone circuit, including Sky digiboxes.

Re: Excessively Slow Connection, Help/Advice appreciated

      Alrighty, heres the BT info:

Download speed achieved during the test was - 81 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 50-250 Kbps.
      Additional Information:
      Your DSL Connection Rate :256 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 135 Kbps

I tested speeds in the master socket yesterday but without unplugging everything else, so ill get right on that and get back to you. I would point out that until i disconnected the ring wire, the sync speed was displayed at ~600. So ill try plugging it back in and see if that improves again.

The ring wire should not effect the speed, downwards, but you may have disturbed another wire when removing it, just check they are properly seated. The Test socket bypasses all your other wiring, so gives the optimum performance.
