      Sagem Speed Fluctuations

      Hi all,

We seem to be having some problems with our Sky BB connection. When our service was first connected I used some online speed checker websites (mainly Speedtest.net) to find out we were around the 6Mb mark. No probs there as that's what we were expecting, so never really checked again.

Now, I've just moved the router to try and get a better wireless signal. This worked in terms of the wirelss, but checking the speeds again we seem to dip to around 3Mb quite regularly. If I reboot the Sagem router the signal will go back up to 6Mb, only for it to drop again a few days later back to the 3Mb mark.

Any ideas what could be causing this? I've emailed Sky, but as usual they've been worse than useless!

      Many thanks

There could bee any number of factors affecting your speed, i had a similar problem when my router was behind my tv cabinet with LOTS of equipment (bass speaker, wireless phone, amplifier etc) causing interference. As soon as i moved it away from there the speed increased somewhat. Check to see if it's near any other electrical equipment and try to plug into the main faceplate not an extension cable.

OK, will do when I get home, at work just now. Any chance you could post the link up on how to get those stats again?

      Thanks.

      Results using wireless connection

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 7003 kbps 796 kbps
Line Attenuation 48.0 db 27.2 db
Noise Margin 7.4 db 15.4 db

Results from master socket + RJ45 (no telephone connected)

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 7006 kbps 796 kbps
Line Attenuation 48.5 db 27.2 db
Noise Margin 7.3 db 15.1 db

When my speed drops again, I'll test again. Any ideas from these figures?

      Re: Sagem Speed Fluctuations

That is a very reasonable speed for your attenuation. It could be you are getting noise spikes which cause the connection to drop and reconnect at a lower speed. Download routerstats lite and run it for a couple of days and see how your noise margin varies.

Remember if you want to know what happens during the night, you will have to leave your PC running.

      Re: Sagem Speed Fluctuations

OK, so my speed has dropped again tonight after being stable at 6Mg for a while. Here are the stats from the router with the dropped speed.

      4238 kbps 796 kbps
Line Attenuation 48.0 db 27.2 db
Noise Margin 17.8 db 14.6 db

      EDIT-:

Just rebooted the router and we're back to this,

      7000 kbps 796 kbps
Line Attenuation 48.0 db 27.2 db
Noise Margin 7.2 db 14.9 db

Any ideas as to the cause. Have been running Utorrent quite heavily recently, would this affect anything?

      Re: Sagem Speed Fluctuations

Looks like you've had a noise spike thats dropped it down to 4.2mb, if you keep getting disconnections then next time it drops to 4.2mb dont reboot the router as it is bound to drop again when synced up at the higher rate.
Did you download router stats lite, run it and observe for noise fluctuations as isitme suggested?

      Re: Sagem Speed Fluctuations

No haven't downloaded the software yet. It was looking quite stable again over the weekend so hadn't taken the time to run the software. Will download tomorrow though to get the extra stats.

Missed a call from Sky CS service today. They emailed to advise to change microfilters. This I have already done. They want me to call them back to troubleshoot but think this will probably be a waste of time.
