      Really odd connection issue. (Resolved)

I have been on Sky Broadband for nearly three years with not a single problem with it, it's been fine.

The problem started last night (29th June 2010). The Netgear Router switched the Internet LED to orange, this has happened before and it usually sorts itself within seconds, if not, unplugging the Router and plugging it back in usually sorts it.

However, the internet stayed down the entire night. The orange LED sometimes completely dissappearing.

Today (30th June 2010) I've experienced a similar problem, though the connection has come and gone fequently.

As it stands now one computer can hold a weak connection, with pages loading at a slower than usual pace, but once another computer connects we either lose the connection again or it slows to a snails pace.

Any form of help would be appriciated, my dad almost refuses to ring Sky at this point.

      Re: Really odd connection issue.

So, the internet light is either off/flashing amber/solid amber? Does it ever go green?

Sounds to me you're dropping sync. Plug into the test socket (link to follow) with just a filter and the short grey dsl cable sky supply. Check whether the internet light goes green/stays green.

How to test your ADSL in the Master Socket

If the internet light is still not staying green whilst in the test socket, then try swapping over for another filter. If still no joy, then you'll probably find the router is on its way out - I assume you have the phase 1 white netgear router if you've been with sky for 3 years?

      Re: Really odd connection issue.

Thank you for your quick reply,

Today we have been getting the solid green (Connected) LED intermittedly. It has been better, but it still disconnects randomly, either for a few seconds or sometimes over 30 minutes.

I did try changing the Filter yesterday when we had the solid amber light but that made no difference.

I haven't tried changing the filter today while we've been getting some connection.

My dad did mention a odd noise over the phone when he used it earlier, which did make me think it could be the filter.

I will dig out the grey cable and try testing the Master Socket. Results on the way soon, with any luck.

I take it you have the router plugged into an extension socket and/or are using an extension cable at the moment?

Mhmm, From the master socket we have an extention reaching upstairs for the main phone being upstairs. A Filter then splits the extention and phoneline, with the Router cable.

      Re: Really odd connection issue.

That's likely your issue. Flat extension cables themselves will work (not optimally usually) for a while and soon degrade in regards to dsl reliability. I'd suggest removing the extension completely, getting the filter directly into the master telephone socket and then using the short grey dsl cable sky supplied to the router. This will mean the router will be right beside the master socket, so run a longer ethernet cable to the computer or connect wirelessly.

      Re: Really odd connection issue.

I see, I'll make the changes and hopefully that'll resolve the issue.

I'll do the changes now and post if this fixes the problem.

Thank you very much for you're help so far!

      Re: Really odd connection issue.

You should also see a possible speed increase (unless the connection has been capped). Throw up your stats once you're done resolving the set-up issue and we'll have a look.

How to get your router statistics

Sky can uncap it if it is indeed capped. The systems were down all day today (man, I had a hard day ) but I'm sure they'll be back up tomorrow if it requires a phone call.

      Re: Really odd connection issue.

I've moved the Router and plugging it into the master socket via a Filter. I have three with me and the connection doesn't seem to change regardless of which filter I use.

I have no real way of knowing if this change has worked bar giving it time to see if it disconnects again. I will say pages are loading faster though.

Here are the Router statistics, however:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3744 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 54.0 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 11.4 db 12.0 db

      Re: Really odd connection issue.

Looks like you're on the connect package. Give it around 72 hours to settle speed-wise. You should hopefully see your noise margin drop to 6db and your downstream connection speed shoot up a bit. Your profile shall also rise meaning more throughput.

Most importantly, of course, is to monitor for more drop outs.
