Connection speed getting slower and slower.

Have had Sky for around a year, it's supposed to be a 8mb connection but I never paid much attention to the speed so long as it's not laggy. It's been plugged in upstairs for the past year, but the other day I noticed it'd dropped from roughly 3mb down-speed to 385k.

Phoned sky, they muttered and uncapped it, got 6.6mb down-speed in the main socket and 8mb in the test but he said we'd have to pay to get them to fit a new faceplate or something, and I decided I can live with 6.6 for now so I didn't ask how much it'd cost (Any ideas?)

Anyway, I plugged the router in upstairs where it'd been before and it dropped to around 1.5mb down-speed, due to bad wiring I guess, I left it there for a few days but now have the router plugged downstairs in the main socket and 30ft of cat6 cable making a hazard out of the stairs. (I really don't want to be wireless.)

However! Yesterday I noticed it'd dropped down to 1500kbps(ish) and today it's down to 761 kbps. Is this because I've had downloads on? Up-speed seems to have dropped a little too.

Also, the router can't detect a PPPoA connection, it couldn't do that before they capped it either but I'm sure it has been able to in the past. It connects fine despite that? Sometimes error code 200, sometimes 300.

Didn't know what I should block out and what I shouldn't.

Do I need to phone them again?

(Edit, oh and I didn't entirely know what router in the signup info, it's a netgear but I don't know if it's v1 or 2 without going downstairs. There's no monthly cap on how much I can download.)

What you need to do is fit a filtered faceplate on your master socket such as AdSLNation's Xte-2005. Then you plug the router into the ADSL output on the filtered faceplate and run it from there, will give you the best speed possible on your connection.

Doesn't look too expensive. How difficult is it to fit? Can I do it myself or do I need to find an electrician? I've changed the faceplates on plug sockets and light switches before now...

It's as simple as removing two screws, disconnecting the wires from the old faceplate and then using an IDC tool to punch down your extension cabling onto the new faceplate, replace two screws and done!

Great, I'll purchase that then. Will it fix the slow connection or do I need to phone Sky for that? Because I'm trying to stream the E3 stuff and it's not going brilliantly.

Providing they did actually remove the cap then it should instantly fix your slow connection. If there is still a cap then you'll have to ring them to get it removed. Bear in mind you will need an IDC tool if you dont already have one!

The tool was only 60p or something, I bought it and the plate. Thanks for your help

Connection speed has now dropped to 384 kbps, the same as it was before they uncapped it. (It's also 3am, so it's not like it's a peak time) Looks like I'm phoning Sky in the morning.

      Modem Status Connected
      DownStream Connection Speed 384 kbps
      UpStream Connection Speed 415 kbps

      Fails compared to yours

"We are currently running a dynamic line management test on your service. Call back on Friday"

      me : but it's slow!

"We are currently running a dynamic line management test on your service. Call back on Friday"

      me : slow? ;_;

"We are currently running a dynamic line management test on your service. I could stop it and reconfigure the line but reconfiguring the line requires me to run a dynamic line management test, call back on Friday. Also it could cause slow connections and disconnects!"

At the moment I'm having to unplug the router and leave it for five minutes once an hour or so, because it randomly disconnects and then just refuses to find an ip address. I can't see how it could be any worse to be honest.

Disconnecting the router will keep DLM running...
