The ring wire is usually orange and it will be connected to terminal 3. You only need cables 2 and 5 connected, the ring wire can adversely affect speeds. The 16mb your getting there is about right for the attenuation, if that's from the test socket then fitting a filtered faceplate will allow you to maintain that speed.

An NTE5 with bell wire filter or filtered faceplate is the correct way to sort the problem while maintaining the wiring scheme. A lot of phones still require the ring wire although this is not a problem if using SIN compliant plug in filters as they have ring capacitors in them.

I'll have to dispute this point, I havent yet come across a phone which requires wire 3 to be connected (I dont even have it connected on my filtered faceplate)

      Re: Broken Test Socket?

i followed this diagram when i was wiring the master socket + extensions: UK Telephone Wiring
so the orange wire going to terminal 3 is not necessary? it wont make a difference though as this is the faceplate which i'm not even using.

atm the router and the phone are connected into the master socket with the faceplate removed so the extensions are not working but i dont think i need them anyway.

Why do you have is disconnected if you have a filtered faceplate? Totally pointless, the ring wire is already isolated from the ADSL signal.
