Question Excessive Capping? Or am I just being whiney.

      Good day all.

Been having a few issues as of late. I am on SkyBroadband Max/Unlimited (Well according to my information at least..)

I understand that there is inevitable capping on my line between 17:00 till around 23:00 approximately. Which is something I've been able to live with quite happily as I don't really download files much anyway mainly gaming and VOIP.

However for the last month or so the capping has been, well in my opinion, a little unfair.

During non peak hours my connection details are, on average:

Connection Speed 5408 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 44 db 50 db
Noise Margin 6 db 22 db

And my speed.io results are always around:

      Download: 4.38 mbit/s
      Upload : 0.40 mbit/s
      Connects : 1379 conn/min
      Ping: 56 ms

Which is more that enough for me considering where I live (Absolute middle of nowhere )

However, roll on 17:00 and for the last month or so I have.. Basically no connectivity at all until midnight or so. I don't have any stats for my "Capped Period" to see if there is any change.. I'll get some soon as I can.

But a speedtest during my capped hours.. Despite requiring me to wait 20 minutes for the page to load and then a further 20 minutes or so for the test to actually begin results in around about:

      Download: 0.08 mbit/s
      Upload : 0.01 mbit/s
Connects : 0 conn/min (it errors at this point)
      Ping: N/A ms

I'll get more accurate information the next evening. As I have to post at 02:00 just to be able to get webpages up...

      Thanks in advance.

Not a lot you can do about it really,(move house or change ISP) you're actually on Sky Connect as there's no LLU at your exchange and as you've noticed its very busy evening time and Sky will not purchase more bandwidth.
On a side note your connection is pretty good for the stats

Run the following speed test at a non-peak time and one at peak-time:

      Test Result

The username it will ask for is your router's MAC address (found on the sticker on the bottom of the router) followed by @skydsl e.g. 00139B982F@skydsl

Edit: Obviously note down all the data results it gives you.

Re: Excessive Capping? Or am I just being whiney.

Thank you very much both for the replies.

I will not be back from work until after the capping. So I wont have an uncapped result until pretty late tonight.

But I shall get to it and I'll have the information you require as soon as I can.

      Thanks

Be happy with it, your Noise Margin is too low and can't hold any more speed, that's a pretty decent speed you have for you line.

Re: Excessive Capping? Or am I just being whiney.

Oh I know that. I've always been very impressed by what I'm getting considering where I live.

I'm just a little curious about my connection not really working at all during peak times. I know it will be slowed down, But I'd expect to still be able to even browse the internet during those times.

I'm not really complaining, And if thats how it's gonna be during the period of time I'm actually home then it's a bit unfortunate. So I was hoping for some other opinions 'tis all

Hi The Connect package is being Traffic Managed 5pm till Midnight, weekend and public holidays. The issue is to many connect Customers and not enough Bandwidth up to now Sky will not be purchasing any more bandwidth. This has been going on for some time now here`s a couple of links about the connect package Sky Connect Broadband - Are you being slowed down? and (Unofficial) FAQ - Sky Connect Users The first thread was started on the 07-01-09.

Ok well I'm assuming this is correct. So here are my results for what they're worth

      Non-peak time:

      Router stats

Connection Speed 5472 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 44 db 50 db
Noise Margin 9 db 22 db

      Speedtest.bt results:

      Peak Time:

      Router Stats

Connection Speed 5408 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 44 db 50 db
Noise Margin 9 db 22 db

      Speedtest.bt results:

So thanks again. I'm assuming from what has been said this is fairly normal.

Your profile is fine, but you're being throttled insanely there. Have you been using bandwidth heavy programs as of recently? A lot of streaming/downloading etc.?

This isn't about his sync speed, though. His sync speed is indeed alright, but his throughput achieved (at peak times) is horrid.
